The Opportunity

As Arup continues to grow its energy business across Asia Pacific and globally, we are investing in a newly established Secondary Engineering team in Vietnam to support complex high‑voltage substation projects across the region and beyond. This team is a key part of Arup’s long‑term growth strategy, providing specialist capability to support transmission, distribution and renewable energy infrastructure projects. Engineers in this team will work closely with colleagues across APAC and internationally, contributing to technically challenging projects that support the energy transition and the decarbonisation of power networks.

The Senior Secondary Engineer provides technical leadership and specialist expertise in the delivery of secondary systems design for high‑voltage substations. This role is suited to an experienced secondary engineer who can act as a technical lead and trusted advisor, guiding design quality, mentoring others, and working collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams. You will play a key role in supporting Arup’s consultancy, advisory and design services, helping to shape solutions for clients across the energy sector while strengthening secondary engineering capability within the wider business.
 

About this role

• Lead and deliver secondary systems design for HV substations (typically 66 kV to 500 kV)
   
• Prepare, review and technically check complete secondary design packages
   
• Provide technical authority and assurance for secondary design outputs
   
• Lead or support the development of protection schemes
   
• Provide specialist input into IEC 61850 based designs
   
• Act as a technical interface with clients, utilities and project stakeholders
   
• Contribute to knowledge sharing, lessons learned, and continuous improvement of Arup’s secondary engineering practices and standards.

Is this role right for you?

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent. 
   
• 10+ years’ experience in HV substation secondary system design within consultancy, utility, or EPC environments. 
   
• Strong technical expertise in:  
   
• Protection & control system design 
   
• AC/DC auxiliary systems 
   
• Interlocking logic and control philosophies 
   
• Proven experience delivering projects to utility and transmission standards
   
• Solid working knowledge of:  
   
• IEC 61850, IEC 60255, IEEE standards 
   
• SCADA and communication protocols (IEC 60870 5 104, DNP3, Modbus, MMS) 
   
• Proficiency in secondary design tools such as:  
   
• AutoCAD, MicroStation, EPLAN, or Engineering Base 
   
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
