Arup Canada continues to capture and deliver large scale, complex and multidisciplinary rail projects.  Our recruitment strategy is focused on performing the work locally and reducing our dependence of subconsultants to increase our revenue share on the large projects such as Eglinton Crosstown West Extension (ECWE), Bloor Yonge Capacity Enhancement and ALTO HSR projects.

Our rail team has experienced significant growth in confirmed work due to the strength of the rail market across the country. Our rail work has grown by winning new projects and through the multiple years of delivery of the Finch West and Edmonton LRT projects.  

The opportunity

  • Lead the overall rail operations planning, interdisciplinary coordination and documentation related to the ECWE project  
  • Develop and support other active rail projects
  • Support current and future rail proposals primarily in Canada
  • Develop new and maintain current relationships with key clients in the public and private sectors 
  • Mentor and develop rail Operations staff from both technical and business perspectives 
  • Oversight, quality assurance and delivery of ECWE operations work 
  • Resource planning for the Canada rail operations team 

     

  • Mentoring staff to develop future leaders, develop junior staff skill-sets, and promote learning from successes and challenges within the rail 

    operations team

  • Developing the technical, commercial and soft skills of rail operations staff
  • Recruiting of new staff to meet the demands of the rail operations business
  • Support the Americas Rail Systems Leader/Rail Discipline Leader by contributing to the overall leadership of the rail practice in Canada

Is this role right for you?

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in engineering
  • Experience working directly with clients as a prime consultant manager is essential
  • 15 years of design experience primarily in the rail transit market in Rail Operations

  • Leading system, process, transformational and organizational operational improvement initiatives 
  • The operational functions of urban rail, commuter/intercity passenger rail and rail freight systems – with sound knowledge of the systems, infrastructure, assets, facilities and customer facing interfaces of each
  • A thorough understanding of major transport issues, emerging priorities and critical issues, as part of a wider operational performance agenda 
  • Strong leadership and people management skills
  • Rail operations planning including service plans, operating plans, fleet cycling and crewing
  • Rail maintenance planning as required for rail vehicles, stations and infrastructure
  • Modelling of rail operations including travel time, headway and network simulation
  • Rail operations cost estimating, including top-down and bottom-up approaches
  • Review/analysis of travel demand forecasts and their application to service planning/fleet requirements 
  • Rail operations business case and feasibility studies
  • Rail operations regulatory and policy advice
  • Rail asset management
  • Rail technology implementation, organizational and asset improvements
  • Consulting experience and the ability to identify solutions and develop strategies and service offerings  
  • Relevant industry experience within a consulting business environment. 
  • Rolling stock/operator licensing arrangements 
  • Establishing and maintaining engineering, technical or operational standards within scope of authority
  • Rail design, integration and implementation
  • Rail systems assurance and V&V
  • DBB, PPP/DBOFM, DB project implementations 
  • Structuring of contract operation for urban rail and commuter/intercity passenger rail, including train operation, fleet maintenance and infrastructure maintenance.

Toronto Hiring Range – The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in Toronto is $240,000 to $260,000 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note, hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of Toronto will differ.
