We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic finance & economics consultant to provide our clients with quality advice to inform their investment decisions for the built environment.
Due to a large demand locally, in Europe, and globally, for the services of the Finance & Economics team, we are looking to bolster our growing team with additional core members with skills, experience and competencies in economic and financial business cases, investment strategies and plans, undertaking economic research, conducting due diligence and lenders technical advisory services and/or the undertaking of value for money and economic impact evaluation analysis. The team delivers quality built-environment related advisory services aligned to Client and internal business requirements.
The permanent and full-time team member will be part of a 5-10 person Irish Finance & Economics team within a c.30 person Mobility, Cities and Infrastructure Advisory team within the c.100 person Advisory and Digital Services team within Arup Ireland; and will be part of the wider Arup Business Investor Advisory and Economics Skills Networks across the 18,000 strong Arup global business.
The Mobility, Cities and Infrastructure Advisory discipline brings clarity to complex challenges through robust analysis, valuable advice, and tangible solutions. Our diverse skills (in geospatial data analytics, finance & economics, and strategy & policy for transport and cities) help clients make confident decisions, leading to sustainable and resilient outcomes for the built environment.
Advisory & Digital Services is a multi-disciplinary team that integrates expertise in strategy, design, people, processes, engineering, economics, and technology to deliver innovative, high-quality built environment solutions to our clients.
The Opportunity
Given the global and local nature of the team’s projects, for both external and internal clients, the role will enable the successful candidate to experience a wide variety of projects in varying sectors, regions, cultures and context. Accordingly, the successful candidate requires a flexibility mindset, proactive attitude and outcomes-focused approach to delivery. They will bring technical excellence, very strong writing and communication skills, and an enthusiasm for developing socially useful project outcomes. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to work both independently and within the wider team, and must be able to contribute to multiple concurrent projects. They will be able to both act upon direction and communicate effective direction to others as needed.
We're looking for someone who is passionate about collaborating with colleagues to give our clients insightful economic and financial advice for their decision making. If successful, you will have the opportunity to:
Take primary responsibility for building and running economic and financial models supporting business cases for major infrastructure projects within Ireland, Europe and potentially Globally
Prepare economic, business and financial analysis for projects, to support a range of advice to be provided to public and private sector clients
Implement public sector business case, economic and financial appraisals and evaluations projects (including Value for Money Reviews) in accordance with local applicable guidance and codes
Provide economic, business and financial analysis for projects led by other Arup businesses to help explain the ‘business impacts’ of solutions they propose to clients
The person in this role will contribute to project-level leadership and is likely to have multiple task-based junior level reports on a project-by-project basis. The role also holds the potential for line-management of juniors following a successful probation period.
As a Finance & Economics Consultant at Arup, you will have:
Experience dealing with financial and economic analysis models, including advanced spreadsheet-based modelling. Additional data-analysis skills and experience utilising languages such as Python are preferrable but not required.
Experience in the preparation of high-quality, analytical reports for communication to enterprise leadership and C-Suite level Clients is required.
Experience of working directly with Clients or enterprise management and leadership is required; with excellent written and oral communication in the English language essential.
Experience in preparing government-side business case documents to facilitate approval of requests and budget allocations is highly preferrable.
Experience in of the Irish Public Spending Code and Infrastructure Guidelines, including sector specific frameworks such as the Department of Transport’s Transport Appraisal Framework (TAF), the National Transport Authority’s (NTA) Project Approval Guidelines (NTA PAG) and/or Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) Project Approval Guidelines (TII PAG) is highly preferrable.
Experience in preparing due diligence assessments for investment, acquisition or bank lending is highly preferrable.
An understanding of Public Private Partnerships and underlying commercial structures and risk allocations is preferrable.
Experience in implementing UK Green and/or Magenta Book aligned projects is beneficial but not necessary.
Qualifications:
Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in economics, finance, business, or a related field of study.
A first-level university degree (Bachelors or equivalent) in economics, finance, business, or a related field of study and in combination with 2 additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Five or more years’ experience working in either consulting roles or in the provision of advisory services within an enterprise structure.

Project delivery
You will plan, prepare, and deliver high quality project deliverables for clients (analysis, modelling, research, reports, presentations) that add value to their business priorities.
You will actively participate in internal and external meetings
You will lead simple financial and economic advisory mandates with support from more junior team members
You will support more significant and complex projects and will likely be responsible for specific economic and financial advisory work streams within multiple concurrent projects
You will manage discrete deliverables, manage junior staff, successfully deliver work on time and within allocated budget, and cultivate peer level client relationships
You will support the execution of processes outlined in Arup’s Management System (AMS) as will be provided to you within your induction process
Client relationships
You will provide timely and quality advice to clients, and respond to client requirements in your field of knowledge
You will help to establish trust with clients
Business development
You will support work winning, client relationship management and business development activities
You will collate and develop content for successful proposals and tender documents, and support the proposal process
You will undertake macroeconomic and market research on regions, geographies, sectors or agreed assets to help inform the broader team’s business development focus and/or support specific pitch effort
You will work with other Arup disciplines to support multidisciplinary bids and winning proposals
You will actively participate in the development of the Finance & Economics team within the wider Mobility, Cities and Infrastructure Advisory team.
You will share your knowledge and experiences with colleagues and actively seek and receive feedback from your team and the wider Arup business.
You will contribute positively to the team’s shared goals, culture, and knowledge.
