The Opportunity

Do you want to join an award-winning town planning team, delivering some of the most complex and challenging projects? We are looking for an individual with the ability to provide quality technical guidance, argue strategic cases, articulate complex issues concisely and manage projects combined with strong influencing and interpersonal skills.

We are seeking to recruit an Associate in our Bristol, Birmingham or Nottingham offices to support the leadership and growth of the team. This is a great opportunity to work with Arup planning leadership nationally and play a key role in growing our planning business. You will have the opportunity to work on some of the most exciting and challenging projects using your leadership, consulting and technical skills.

We would welcome applications from candidates with experience of leading a range of planning applications and advising clients across commercial, mixed use and infrastructure schemes.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?

The role will have a focus on developing client relationships and identifying project opportunities, including bidding and delivering projects to raise Arup's profile and promoting our work in the marketplace. The role could be located in our Bristol, Birmingham or Nottingham offices and you will play a key role in growing our market profile in your preferred location by engaging with existing and potential clients, positioning Arup to ensure there is a strong pipeline and identifying opportunities for new work.

The role will also involve leading the delivery of projects, including acting as the key client interface, providing strategic direction to the team, providing Quality Assurance and ensuring commercial success. This will include interfacing with multi-disciplinary project teams across Arup to ensure client/project opportunities are maximised and the integrated delivery of projects.

As part of the Planning Leadership, you will have a role in supporting the development of skills across our national town planning team as well as the team in your chosen office location, working with others in the leadership to guide, motivate and enthuse the team.

You should apply if you enjoy navigating complex planning and consenting processes to help deliver nationally and regionally significant projects; value collaborative, multidisciplinary working; and want to influence the future of places across the UK.

We are seeking the following skills:

  • Experience of advising clients on complex planning matters relating to consenting and delivery and an excellent understanding of the planning context and market in your preferred location. Including knowledge of planning legislation and planning policy.

  • Educated to a degree level in town planning or similar equivalent degree and Membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (MRTPI).

  • Proven consultancy or public sector leadership skills, including working with clients and stakeholders to understand their requirements and leading business development activities.

  • A background in leading multi-disciplinary teams in the bidding and delivery of projects and management of sub-consultants where necessary.

  • Experience of leadership within a commercial environment (bids and projects), including client liaison, programme and time management, quality assurance and financial/budget control.
