Joining Arup

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

Watch this short clip to discover how Arup are shaping a better world and how you could be a part of it!

The Opportunities

Do you want to join an award-winning town planning team, delivering some of the most complex and challenging projects?

We are looking to recruit Senior Town Planners/Town Planners in our Birmingham, Nottingham, Bristol or Cardiff officers. We would welcome applications from candidates from a range of planning backgrounds including development management, infrastructure consenting or planning policy and strategy development. You should have the ability to provide quality technical work, manage project teams or elements of projects combined with strong interpersonal skills.

At Arup, you will work with specialists and infrastructure experts to shape policy and deliver projects to create sustainable and inclusive places. We are working on projects of national significance that will shape the future of the UK. We are looking for planners to help deliver this exciting portfolio of work which spans the preparation of national, regional and local planning policy, consenting of major energy, water and transport schemes and enabling the development of major sites.

The role could involve a range of planning work depending on experience and interest including supporting the preparation of planning applications under TCPA or other consenting regimes such as Development Consent Orders and/or the preparation of planning policy documents, spatial strategies and evidence base studies.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Are these roles right for you?

You should apply if you enjoy translating complex evidence into clear, practical policy or navigating complex planning and consenting processes to help deliver significant projects; value collaborative, multidisciplinary working; and want to influence the future of places across the UK. You will be comfortable taking ownership of your work, developing client relationships, coordinating technical inputs and engaging confidently with stakeholders, while supporting colleagues and continuing to develop your own technical, commercial and leadership skills. You should be curious about technology, understand the implications of data, GIS and AI for planning, and have an interest in how digital approaches and tools could improve the way we analyse evidence, engage people or make decisions.

We are seeking the following:

  • Degree and/or masters in town planning or similar degree and chartered membership of RTPI or equivalent professional body.

  • A background working in a professional planning role such as within a consultancy or public sector setting with knowledge of planning legislation and planning policy.

  • Experience of drafting planning reports or strategies for clients, managing the preparation of planning applications and data analysis, or preparing policy documents including evidence base studies.

  • Project management experience would be preferable, including programme and commercial aspects.

  • Comfortable leading client meetings and contributing to the development of a town planning business.
