Arup’s Advanced Digital Engineering group is a team of over 300 expert consultants that brings together Arup’s traditional engineering and design strengths with advanced digital expertise in data, software development, analytics, and user–centred design.

Oasys is the software house of Arup. Under the Oasys brand we develop the Oasys LS-DYNA Environment - complex engineering software used for simulation in automotive, nuclear and civil engineering industries (B2B). 

We’re committed to producing the market leading applications for LS-DYNA, and we are looking for someone to lead and shape the User Interface / User Experience (UI/UX) priorities for our applications. The role will also link into Arup’s wider Advanced Digital Engineering group. The role can either be based in our Solihull or London office.

About this career opportunity

You will be working within the Oasys LS-DYNA product team as strategic priority lead for UI/UX.  We are looking for an established designer who has worked on engineering/3D modelling software, or who would like to learn more about engineering software and the associated user experience. Whilst we will want you to be able to demonstrate competencies in rapid UI wireframes for concept design, these will be for inspiration and strategic thinking - we won't expect these to be pixel perfect. The role will be centred more around experience design and UX design of the portfolio. So strategic thinking is key.

Role responsibilities include:

The role will include setting direction and strategy for future UI/UX work, including shape and size of associated team and Making strategic UX decisions related to design and usability. Reviewing and prioritising current UI/UX workload and managing resourcing and delivery of UI/UX work.Working directly with the software development team to inform and support design/UX decisions. Developing a strategy for better serving our international users who might have limited English language knowledge, e.g. China and Japan. Leading regular research engagement with internal and external users, to inform the above and facilitating stakeholder workshops. Managing the production of UI/UX requirements/guidance material to be used by the development team

Note that although web technology forms part of the Oasys LS-DYNA Suite, the applications within the suite are primarily desktop based.

Although your primary focus will be the Oasys LS-DYNA Suite, you will link into the wider development community within Arup. Here you will collaborate with consultant developers, data scientists, user researchers and user interface designers who work on various software development projects across many industries. 

Requirements and skills

Qualifications

  • An undergraduate or master’s degree in a design field, placement experience, or other recognition. 

Essential Skills and Knowledge:

  • A portfolio that demonstrates experience in UI/UX design
  • Experience of working independently on UX work
  • Experience in leading UI/UX work/teams
  • Experience of collaborating and working with Software Engineers
  • Experience in a client facing role, including facilitating workshops or presenting work
  • Technology literate - you should understand the logic behind desktop applications and web technologies

Desirable Skills and Knowledge:

  • Experience of working on 3D modelling software
  • Experience in, or interest in, the automotive industry and/or built environment
  • Familiarity with wireframing and prototyping tools like Figma
  • Experience of working on Agile projects.
