We are currently seeking a Rail Systems Engineer/Specialist – Requirements Management to join our Rail Systems Team in Toronto and support a portfolio of major rail and transit infrastructure programs across Canada and the United States. This role will focus on requirements engineering, traceability, compliance, and systems integration activities within complex, multidisciplinary project environments. 

Reporting to the Rail Systems Requirements Management Lead and working closely with project managers and discipline leads, you will support project teams at both bid and delivery stages. You will provide technical expertise in requirements management, database administration (IBM DOORS Classic and/or DOORS Next), and compliance reporting across the full systems engineering lifecycle. 

The role requires strong analytical capability, advanced proficiency in DOORS as a power-user, and the confidence to interface directly with clients and stakeholders in technical workshops and formal review settings. You will work collaboratively with engineering teams to ensure requirements are structured, traceable, verifiable, and aligned with contractual and regulatory obligations. 

The position offers scope for personal skill development, especially in relation to increasing requirements management expertise within a rail environment and also mentoring more junior members of the team. The focus will be on developing existing skills and experience and sharing this knowledge with other team members, in a stimulating and challenging project environment, and so enhancing Arup’s overall systems engineering and rail capability. 

Responsibilities of this specific role will include, but not be limited to the following: 

  • Lead administration and management of the Requirements Traceability Matrix (RTM) using IBM DOORS Classic and/or DOORS Next (DNG 
  • Act as a DOORS power-user, including module setup and structuring, attribute configuration, traceability linking, baselining, reporting, and data integrity management 
  • Maintain and continuously improve requirements database structure, workflows, and configuration control processes 
  • Develop, refine, and manage system, subsystem, interface, and verification requirements throughout all phases of the project lifecycle 
  • Ensure complete end-to-end traceability from contractual requirements through design and verification 
  • Support compliance tracking, audit readiness, and contractual reporting obligations 
  • Generate structured reports, dashboards, and metrics from DOORS and associated tools to support internal and client-facing reporting 
  • Perform advanced data analysis using Excel and other applicable tools to validate traceability and requirements completeness 
  • Coordinate closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure alignment between requirements and design outputs 
  • Support systems integration and interface management activities, where applicable 
  • Represent Arup in client meetings and technical workshops related to requirements management, traceability, and compliance 
  • Lead or support client-facing discussions on requirements status, traceability approach, baselines, and verification planning 
  • Prepare technical memoranda and compliance reports for internal and external stakeholders 
  • Present requirements status and compliance findings clearly and confidently to both technical and non-technical audiences 
  • Support Technical Advisory / Owner’s Engineer services including research, gap analysis, and compliance assessments 
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of requirements management processes and standards across projects 

 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Electrical, Computer, Civil, Mechanical, Electronic, Systems or similar) 

 

Competencies and Experience 

Required:

  • Minimum 4 years of demonstrated experience in Rail and Transit Infrastructure Requirements Management 
  • Advanced proficiency in IBM DOORS (Classic and/or DOORS Next), including module configuration, attribute management, traceability creation and validation, baselining, and structured reporting 
  • Experience supporting large, multidisciplinary infrastructure programs with formal compliance and audit requirements 
  • Strong understanding of Systems Engineering principles and the “V” lifecycle 
  • Strong analytical capability with advanced Excel skills (VBA or scripting experience considered an asset) 
  • Proven ability to interface directly with clients and present technical information clearly and confidently in formal meeting settings 
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Must not require sponsorship now or in the future to be considered for this role 

Preferred:  

  • P.Eng. designation or working toward licensure 
  • Experience supporting major public transit agencies or commuter rail / LRT / subway programs 
  • Knowledge of AREMA, NFPA, ISO/IEC/IEEE, and agency design standards 
  • Experience with DXL scripting or workflow configuration within DOORS 
  • Membership in professional organizations such as INCOSE

Seattle Hiring Range – The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in Toronto is $97,000 to $115,000 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of Seattle will differ.
