The Opportunity

We are looking for a junior mid-level Solicitor with experience in construction law, professional services, professional indemnity insurance and/or related fields (whether gained in private practice or in-house) to join our in-house legal team.  We anticipate the role will be based in our new our office in central Birmingham; however, we are also willing to consider the role being based at another Arup’s UK offices (including London).

You will be able to provide legal support and advice on a broad range of issues relevant to a professional services business which will include reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts, providing ongoing project advice, dispute resolution, and broader strategic matters, although it will be primarily a non-contentious role.

Knowledge of other areas of law arising in the industry is useful, e.g. health and safety law, planning & environmental law, intellectual property law, data privacy or public procurement law.

We are an in-house regional team of around 20 people, largely based around London supporting Arup across UK, India, Middle East and Africa.

Most of our Solicitors focus on support to specific parts of this region, for instance, in the UK, our business in the West, Midlands, Southeast, North/Scotland or Northwest & Yorkshire.

We are part of a highly connected global legal team which offers many opportunities for development.  You will be able to enjoy our hybrid work model that creates an environment that accommodates different needs and allows members to integrate their work and personal lives alongside the needs of our business.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas.

You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for people who:

  • Are qualified Solicitors that can provide direct legal advice, blending legal expertise with commercial awareness.
  • Will take ownership of designated business segments, fostering robust internal networks.
  • Can identify and address training needs, offering tailored workshops or seminars.
  • Can advise on complex contractual issues, such as joint ventures, arrangements with building contractors, business advisory contracts or major bids and draft and review standard/non-standard contracts, with limited supervision.
  • Prepare for and conduct complex negotiations.
  • Work collaboratively within a mutually supportive team environment with a focus on team success and contribute to ongoing skills development for the benefit of the whole legal team.
