The Opportunity  

We have opportunities for experienced and ambitious development planning senior / principal transport consultants to join our innovative, collaborative and creative Transport Consulting team in London. There are differing job titles within the industry and this opportunity would suit senior and principal consultants, senior transport and principal transport engineers, and senior and principal transport planners. 

Whilst primarily a London based role, candidates that are close to our Cambridge or Southampton offices could potentially support and populate these offices.  This offers the opportunity for individuals to work more independently for some days in those offices, to further develop local contacts and project opportunities. 

This position will support a wide range of projects including: 

  • High profile developments and regeneration schemes, such as Green Quarter, Southall, Canada Water, Southwark, or London Cancer Hub life science development, Sutton. 

  • International masterplans in Middle East and North Africa, and as far afield as Bhutan. 

  • New Towns and major housing schemes across the UK. 

  • Major infrastructure and airport projects such as Euston Station redevelopment, Heathrow expansion and infrastructure projects in energy and water sectors. 

  • Local Government and public sector projects such as town centres strategies, active travel strategies, policy development, public sector led housing development and public transport strategies. 

You will be expected to support with a range of work including project management and providing technical leadership on the delivery of transport and development planning advice. This includes the production of Transport Assessments, Environmental Statements and associated documents for development planning projects. 

You will also support by advising clients on active travel and sustainable transport opportunities, the development of transport strategies, technical analysis and modelling as well as any on-site and off-site designs for all development and street users. You will take responsibility for delivering technical excellence whilst addressing our client’s needs. 

Is this role right for you? 

We are seeking enthusiastic and technically competent candidates who are interested in creating excellent places and spaces for buildings, masterplans and cities. You will be part of our team delivering transport planning and development planning projects for private and public sector clients. 

You should enjoy taking responsibility, being proactive and taking initiative within a supportive and encouraging team. You should be keen to broaden your technical skills to support innovation, knowledge development and growth of peers / junior colleagues and their own career development. 

You will also support the team in business development and work-winning and the promotion of Arup in external markets. 

Requirements: 

  • Have experience in developing effective working relationships with project teams and clients 

  • Be passionate about the role of transport in supporting local, regional and national objectives 

  • Have experience in managing and delivering successful projects (time, cost, technical quality) as Project Manager for development planning projects 

  • Have experience in transport planning and design development for development sites, urban areas, public realm or major destinations and interchanges 

  • Demonstrate experience in analysing, modelling and assessing future transport demands and network requirements 

  • Demonstrate experience of applying transport design guidance in a development planning context (e.g. DMRB, Manual for Streets, walking, cycling and bus design standards) 

  • Demonstrate the development and delivery of transport strategies that encompass the needs of all relevant transport users 

  • Demonstrate an ability to write and communicate in a well-structured and logical way, using a variety of methods to effectively illustrate points 

You will ideally be able to demonstrate 

  • Proven experience and a good track record from working at a consultancy, delivering transport planning advice for planning applications 

  • Experience of working on projects in the London and South East  

  • Enthusiastic and capable of developing externally facing role engaging with clients, moving further into a work winning role as your career progresses
