Senior SCADA Engineer - Canada
Joining Arup
Arup’s purpose, shared values, and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world. This job posting represents an active vacancy within our organization and is open for immediate recruitment.
The opportunity
Arup's Energy team in Canada is growing. As demand for advanced data centre infrastructure accelerates across North America, we are looking for a Senior SCADA Engineer to join our team and play a central role in delivering some of the most technically complex and consequential projects in our portfolio.
You will work across a live pipeline of data centre projects spanning Canada and the United States, contributing from early design through to commissioning and handover. This is a hands-on technical role with real breadth as you will be involved in SCADA architecture development, control philosophy design, system integration, and field commissioning, while also engaging directly with clients, contractors, and grid operators. The work is varied, the projects are high-profile, and the team is collaborative.
This is also a role with genuine development potential. As we build out this capability within the firm, there is an opportunity for the right person to help shape how SCADA engineering is delivered at Arup across the region, while mentoring junior team members, contributing to business development, and growing with a practice that is investing in this space for the long term.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead SCADA engineering design for data centre and associated infrastructure projects, including network topology, server/client configurations, RTUs, HMIs, and communication interfaces.
- Develop and review control philosophies, functional design specifications, and detailed design documentation
- Engineer secure and redundant communication systems using standard protocols including DNP3, Modbus TCP/IP, IEC 61850, and OPC
- Coordinate with contractors, utilities, and grid operators to support system energization and compliance
- Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers and field technicians
- Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical, protection & control, and cybersecurity disciplines
Is this role right for you?
- A degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline; a P.Eng. designation (or eligibility) is required
- Atleast 8 years of experience in SCADA engineering, with a strong track record in system design, integration, and commissioning
- Demonstrated expertise in communication protocols including DNP3, IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-101/103/104, and Modbus
- Hands-on experience with SCADA platforms and tools such as SEL RTAC, Inductive Automation Ignition, or equivalent; familiarity with RTU/HMI platforms across multiple vendors is an asset
- Experience on data centre, substation, or complex critical infrastructure projects; exposure to North American grid compliance and utility interconnection requirements is valued
- A collaborative approach to project delivery, with the ability to lead technical workstreams and communicate effectively across disciplines and with clients
