We work collaboratively across the infrastructure, water, transport, mining and energy sectors, contributing to projects involving tunnels, shafts, caverns, underground structures and rock slopes in the UK and internationally.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a talented and motivated Senior Rock Mechanics Engineer to join our Ground Engineering team. You will work on a diverse portfolio of projects across the infrastructure, water, transport, mining and energy sectors, supporting projects from feasibility and design through to construction.

You will assess geological and geotechnical conditions, interpret site investigation data, develop ground models and undertake rock mechanics analyses and numerical modelling. You will contribute to the design and assessment of tunnels, shafts, caverns, underground structures, rock slopes and associated support systems.

Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will help develop practical and buildable engineering solutions, prepare technical reports and design documentation, and provide support through site visits, inspections and construction activities. You will also contribute to technical innovation, share knowledge and support the development of graduate and less experienced engineers.

The role offers exposure to a wide range of complex rock engineering challenges, advanced analytical tools and high-profile projects in the UK and internationally. You will be supported in developing your technical expertise, progressing towards professional accreditation and shaping your longer-term career.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for people who have:

·       Relevant experience in rock mechanics, rock engineering, engineering geology, tunnelling, underground construction, mining or associated geotechnical projects.

·       A degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, Engineering Geology, Mining Engineering or a related discipline, together with progress towards professional accreditation. A relevant master’s degree would be advantageous.

·       A good understanding of rock mass characterisation and classification, geological and structural interpretation, underground excavation behaviour, rock support principles and rock slope stability.

·       Experience using numerical modelling software such as FLAC3D, RS2, RS3, PLAXIS, UDEC, 3DEC or comparable tools to assess ground behaviour and excavation performance.

·       Strong analytical, communication and technical report-writing skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams and support the development of less experienced colleagues.

Experience involving tunnels, shafts, caverns, hydropower, mining or major infrastructure projects would be beneficial. Familiarity with tunnel boring machine or drill-and-blast construction methods, site-based construction support, or coding and automation using Python, MATLAB, VBA or similar tools would also be welcomed, but is not essential.
