The role

A Senior Project Manager is required to join the Programme and Project Management (PPM) team based in the Midlands Campus office. Responsibilities will include leading, monitoring and managing the delivery of projects and programmes in the highways and transportation sector, working with multi-disciplinary technical teams and managing multiple client stakeholders. 

Our team supports Arup colleagues in the delivery of our major infrastructure projects. Assignments will involve leading on the establishment and delivery of project controls functions, including commercial, risk and schedule management and reporting.

Our team is also actively involved in the provision of business advisory and PMO services to external clients where we support and advise our clients in developing and implementing PMOs, business strategies and processes. 

The candidate will be expected to develop and lead project and programme management assignments in the Arup and/or client environment. It also importantly includes developing and maintaining successful client and team relationships and supporting work winning.

This will include responsibility for the performance and development of a team of project managers, providing guidance, training and direction to the team. 

The candidate will report to the Midlands Programme and Project team. The candidate will be required to integrate into project teams or work on individual assignments, often working closely with technical discipline leaders, cost consultants, specialists, and other consultants / contractors as required. 

Leading projects and working collaboratively within a mutually supportive team environment with a focus on team success.
Extend relationships with existing clients and assist in the preparation and delivery of tender submissions and client pitches. Be responsible for a number of project managers and should be able to demonstrate ability to manage priorities across a variety of demanding client needs.

The post will provide an opportunity to:

•    Support the development of our wider PPM capability.
•    Significantly enhance the candidate’s own leadership skill, taking responsibility for the delivery PMO functions and project commercial outcomes.
•    Take on responsibility for being Arup’s key client contact on external facing commissions.
•    Develop and promote best-practice within the team.
•    Identify new project opportunities for the team.

The candidate will be expected to have daily contact with:

•    Other members of the PPM group.
•    Technical discipline leads.
•    Clients.
•    Specialist advisors and sub-consultants etc.
•    External companies engaged on projects.

Requirements and skills

Essential skills and knowledge

•    Minimum five years’ experience of working in a project management role, ideally with experience on medium to large scale transport infrastructure projects / programmes or working within a PMO environment. 
•    Demonstrable leadership, commercial awareness, ability to lead multi-disciplinary project teams, independent thinking, working under pressure and experience of meeting strict deadlines.

Qualifications

•    The candidate will be degree qualified and chartered member of an accredited technical institution (ICE, IStructE, IMechE, IEE and RICS etc). Candidate shall have a recognised PM qualification such as MAPM.

Desirable skills and knowledge

•    Previous experience working in a business advisory function would be highly advantageous.
•    Experience or interest in developing digital tools (PowerBI etc).
