The Role

We are looking for a Senior Lab Planner with expertise and portfolio of designing and delivering Laboratory, R&D, specialist healthcare and clean room manufacturing facilities from concept stage to final handover to join and take a significant role in the Science and Healthcare sectors team based in London (regional base may also be possible e.g. Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester). You will work with UK Architecture, the UK Science Business Lead and other Arup business leaders in the SIT sector to win new work and grow our portfolio, with a focus on the Life Sciences, Healthcare & Cleanroom sector. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for enhancing our current delivery of “Total Architecture” predominantly in the Science & Healthcare market and will enhance our cross-discipline collaboration to refine designs by taking a holistic view of all the technical challenges and continue our drive to true “Total Architecture”. You will join our UK team and will work on projects in the UK and globally.

Key responsibilities include: 

•         Deliver “Total Architecture” (total design and integrated project delivery) approach to our Science & cleanroom projects.

•        Direct and work in a design capacity on projects in both Science / Healthcare and also other sectors to suit work load, with a focus on Architectural Lab planning.

•        Engage with global design teams to co-ordinate and build Arup’s skills, portfolio and thought leaders in the sector

•        Future looking at new technologies in the built environment and the Life Sciences & Cleanroom sector.

•        Input or guide submissions where needed.

•        Design Management responsibility for Life Science & Cleanroom and other projects in other sectors to suit workload.

Is this role right for you?

The successful candidate would be a qualified building professional (e.g. RIBA/ ARB or equivalent overseas registration) that will work closely with clients and internal Arup teams and external partners.  

•        Degree holder or above in the built environment

•        Extensive background working in a design led environment and directing design teams in response to large major projects.

•        Strong design, client liaison and presentation skills.

•        Direct and extensive experience designing complex highly serviced new & refurbishment laboratories and clean manufacturing facilities, including in a highly regulated environment such as GLP, GMP, GMO, ACDP, SAPO, MHRA, FDA, HSE, CTSA and CPNI.

•        Ability to work closely with Science stakeholders and draft appropriate and comprehensive requirements documents such as Basis of Design (BoD), User Requirement Schedules (URSs), Employers Requirements (ERs) and Schedules of Requirements (SoR).

•        Lab Planning skills, including adjacencies, flow and the layout, detailing and specification of equipment and furniture. 

•        Building design and delivery at all stages from RIBA 0/1 through to completion

•        A background of providing direction to international and multidisciplinary design teams.

•        Proficiency in design software including revit and free-hand sketching.

•      Ability to travel for project related activities.
