Senior Geologist

We currently have a requirement for a Senior Engineering Geologist to join our Ground Engineering Team in Ireland. We are seeking candidates that can deliver work of the highest standard to demanding deadlines, who also have along with excellent communication skills.

Arup’s Ground Engineering team in Ireland includes geotechnical engineers, engineering geologists, hydrogeologists, and geoenvironmental specialists, supported by our global expertise across all disciplines. We provide innovative ground engineering solutions for all types of projects and clients, both within Ireland and internationally, adding value through technical excellence, creative thinking, and understanding of our client’s long-term objectives. We have a strong focus on implementing sustainability, resiliency and circular economy principles on projects, and on incorporating digital initiatives in order to optimise outcomes for our clients.

Our current Irish projects include a number of major inter-urban highways, metro and rail projects, and a range of building developments across the residential, commercial, and science/technology sectors along with offshore wind related projects, due diligence and geohazard assessments such as the Cliffs of Moher

Your responsibilities

  • Contribute to projects that deliver high quality and pragmatic advice and solutions to environmental and engineering problems;
  • Performing a wide variety of technical, field and office based work providing engineering geology/geotechnical input to engineering projects with a focus on analytical design;

  • Preparation of geotechnical desk studies including aerial photograph analysis and walkovers including the preparation of conceptual ground models;
  • Geomorphological and geological field mapping ;

  • Geo-hazard assessment and mitigation/remediation design;

  • Technical design, procurement, monitoring, laboratory scheduling and interpretation of site investigations for a wide variety of ground conditions in a range of environments;

  • Structural geology and rock mechanics for engineering design;

  • Day to day use of various software such as ArcGIS, Leapfrog and various geological and geotechnical software packages;

  • Report writing including geological interpretative reports, environmental impact statements and reporting for engineering works including slope stability, retaining structures and foundations.

  • Working closely with designers of other disciplines to produce co-ordinated designs taking account of engineering geological considerations;

  • Project management and working within larger project teams, with responsibility for production of deliverables to agreed timelines and budgets;

  • Attending project meetings and communicating with all grades of staff, external design team members and clients; 

  • Working independently and being responsible for checking the quality and accuracy of your own work, while providing technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced members of the team. 

Current Projects/Skills and attributes needed

  • BSc or equivalent in Geology, Earth Science, Engineering Geology or similar
  • Masters Degree or Higher in Engineering Geology, Soil Mechanics or similar strongly preferred
  • Professional Status/Chartered Status of a professional organisation such as the Institute of Geologists of Ireland, European Federation of Geologists or similar
  • 8 plus years post graduate experience that has developed a good understanding and knowledge in this field.  Previous engineering geology work experience in a consultancy environment an advantage.
  • Flexibility and enthusiasm for fieldwork and travel, and a valid driver’s license

Your Education/Profile

       Enthusiasm and experience in the field of engineering geology gained on projects.

       You will be an inquisitive, creative, solution-orientated designer.

       Have an awareness and willingness to develop understanding of infrastructure and development projects beyond your own discipline.

       Experience with project management and coordination of small project teams

       Experience in liaison with, and supervision of, site investigation contractors. Ability to work under pressure, balance priorities, and meet strict deadlines is essential.

       Excellent planning, organisational and time management skills.

       Demonstrate a strong ability to communicate through sketching, drawing, presentations, and in writing.

       Willingness to develop commercial awareness and acumen, in addition to technical design skills.
