As a Senior Fire Engineer you will be working with a creative, innovative, multi-cultural and self-motivated team of fire safety consultants in India, the wider UKIMEA region and globally. The successful candidate will complement our fire safety consultants by assisting with the implementation of fire engineering solutions and fire strategies across our projects. The Opportunity
The successful candidate will form part of the project team on a range of different projects, managing junior engineers, and being supported by the wider team as necessary. The role will involve interactive and collaborative working with our fire engineers and with colleagues throughout the multidisciplinary teams at Arup. The projects will be diverse, exciting and range from conceptual fire strategy and masterplan developments through to detailed design and handing over landmark projects.
Our Fire Engineering team takes a particularly active role in the development of our people and routinely provide opportunities to attend appropriate training and development courses. Also, because of the developing nature of fire engineering, employees are encouraged to attend annual conferences and CPD events (both internal and external). Once you have demonstrated a suitable skill level in fire engineering and delivery of projects there will be a number of opportunities to advance your career.
We are looking for someone who is technically excellent and capable of delivering quality fire safety solutions on time and on budget. A proven track record of gaining agreement for prescriptive and performance-based design solutions from approving authorities is also essential.
As a senior member of the Fire team, you will have strong communication and negotiating skills and experience of leading project teams. You will be a team player capable of imparting knowledge and experience to other members of the team to grow and develop them under your support.
You should have strong commercial and client facing skills and be able to represent Arup externally with minimal supervision. An existing portfolio of clients / contacts in the industry would be of benefit.
Experience in the principles of smoke control and means of escape are essential and knowledge of fire safety codes, standards and guidance associated with the industry is also important.

Is this role right for you?
We are looking for candidates with:
- A minimum Bachelor’s degree in a relevant degree subject (fire engineering, other types of engineering, or architecture related degree).
- Chartered status with a relevant institution such as the Institution of Fire Engineers or be close to gaining Chartered Engineer status or equivalent (e.g. Professional Engineer in USA).
- 7+ years’ experience in a consultancy or similar environment with at least 3 years in a similar senior position.
Extensive experience in delivering fire engineered solutions. - Awareness of industry challenges and code changes and experience in implementation in projects as well as discussing/presenting to clients and stakeholders on the topic.
- Knowledge of IBC and NFPA codes and standards would be a benefit but not essential.
- Be familiar with RIBA stages of design or other design frameworks and understand the total fire concept: from the client brief through to construction and operation, the fire engineering challenges relevant to different design stages and the level/type of fire engineering input required to progress the design and contribute to completion.
- Experience in managing other engineers in the development and implementation of fire strategies, projects, and research initiatives.
- Experience in managing financial performance on projects.
- Experience in negotiation and agreement of scope, fee, contractual terms and conditions with clients. Understand and manage the scope and relevant programme constraints of projects, experience in project changes management.
- Experience in presenting and discussing design solutions, including fire engineering assessments, to approving authorities and other stakeholders.
- Experience in teaching, mentoring and supporting junior engineers in their career development.
- Excellent report writing, presentation and communication skills, be collaborative, be creative and engaging.
- Experience in business development activities and establishing a network of clients / colleagues inside and outside Arup.
