Job Title: Senior Environmental & Social (E&S) Advisory Consultant
Location:  Any of Arup’s UK/ European/ African offices

Job Overview

We are recognised as leading consultants in supporting finance-sector clients identify and address environmental, social and governance (ESG) impacts, risks and opportunities on some of the most important infrastructure investments in Africa, Eastern Europe, Central and Western Asia today.  This includes several complex Lenders Environmental and Social Advisory roles, ESG advisory services and advice and support to attract sustainable finance.  Over the next three years we aim to substantially grow our Lenders’ E&S Advisory and Sustainable Investment Advisory business and so are looking to recruit across a range of skills and grades.

The Opportunity
We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Consultant to join our established and growing Lenders Environmental and Social Advisory team.  

You will manage the delivery of Lenders’ environmental and social consultant (LESC), ESG advisory and project preparation commissions for complex and internationally high-profile infrastructure projects. In addition, and as part of an enthusiastic and ambitious team, you will collaborate with colleagues across all Arup regions to contribute to the growth of our business, our skills and our personnel.  This includes building and growing client relationships, sharing and developing your ideas and contributing to innovation and research in new products and services that aim to shape a sustainable future.

Role

  • Manage and deliver E&S and ESG advisory services to Lenders, financial investors and their clients including gap analyses, due diligence, independent monitoring, ESIAs / ESMPs, sustainability appraisals, E&S/ESG management and reporting systems and Environmental and Social Action Plans (ESAP). 
  • Contribute to the team’s business development including seeking and developing opportunities, preparing and delivering thought leadership and leading on the preparation of proposals and promotional materials.  
  • Line-manage more junior team members and help grow the team through recruitment, development and training.
  • Contribute to and pursue opportunities to influence the sustainability of infrastructure, the built environment and our own processes and services, through thought leadership and innovation.
  • Undertake regular short-term travel to project sites overseas.
  •  Establish and maintain trusted relationships with external clients, and colleagues within Arup. 
  •  Represent Arup at external meetings with clients, stakeholders and partners.
  • Work independently with limited supervision.

Requirements:

You will be able to demonstrate your understanding, skill, and experience in the following areas:

  • A passion for influencing the sustainable design and delivery of infrastructure across the project cycle in developing economies with at least ten years of transferable or actual experience in addressing environmental and social/ESG risks and opportunities in internationally financed projects.
  • A degree or post graduate degree in an environment, social, health and safety or sustainability related science.
  • Practical application of IFI environmental and social (E&S) risk management frameworks (e.g. e.g IFC/World Bank, EBRD, ADB, IADB, AfDB, Equator Principles etc) to lender-financed projects in a project finance context (PPP or sovereign structured finance) in a developing country context. 
  • Managing the delivery of Lenders E&S/ESG Advisory commissions, including gap analyses, ESDD, ESIA, performance monitoring and assurance etc for a complex Category A project.
  • Communicating clearly and impactfully to a diverse range of stakeholders from CEOs, government officials, bankers and lawyers, to contractors and project-affected people.

In additional to the above we are looking for members of the team to have a passion for delivering a sustainable future and for continual improvement of both self and the team. As you would be required to present to senior management including CEOs, investors and board members, excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are required, along with a strong commercial awareness with proven ability of managing self and others (including subcontractors) deliver multiple work streams within tight budgets and time constraints, checking the work of others, managing commercial risks, liaising with and managing clients and developing business.

In addition, candidates with the following will have a distinct advantage:

  • Recognised professional profile (e.g. chartership) with a relevant Professional Body or organization.
  • Site-based or 'in-house' experience, working with contractors and consultants to deliver practical solutions to comply with Lenders E&S frameworks under Public Private Partnership contracting models
  • First-hand experience of developing and implementing the necessary environmental and social management, monitoring and reporting systems for complex projects to meet Lenders standards or equivalent.
  • Professional experience working in a construction EHS site management or supervision role on projects in countries and / or with workers from countries where EHS standards (or their enforcement) are less well-regulated or enforced than the UK (or equivalent).
  • Applying systems thinking to sustainability challenges in the infrastructure context.
  • Ability to work in one or more foreign languages.
