Role

We are currently looking for an experienced environmental consultant who brings expertise in the environmental scope (feasibility, impact assessment, permitting, monitoring, due diligence) of land development, building and infrastructure projects in Spain. The focus of the role is to support the growth of our environmental business in Spain and our environment and social local team in Madrid, as well as contributing to the successful delivery of projects across Europe. 

The person will be involved in the following tasks:

  • Setting the vision and priorities for Arup’s Spain business in the Environmental Services market.  
  • Developing and implementing a market and client-facing business plan to position Arup to meet future market needs and position Arup as a prime Environmental Services consultancy in Spain. 
  • Increasing Arup’s work on Environmental Services consultancy projects across existing and new clients to secure a strong pipeline of work in Spain. 
  • Forging strategic partnerships which link government bodies and clients, where there is mutual benefit in working together, and/or bringing in and developing new strategic partners. 
  • Creating an enabling environment which offers Environmental Services to every service proposition in Arup. 
  • Leading and supporting a team of environmental experts in Madrid to deliver excellent work, ensuring the quality of the work delivered and developing the appropriate skillset to the environmental service offering.  

 

Minimum requirements

Nobody is perfect and all career paths are different. We look forward to receiving your application, even if you do not fulfil all our requirements: 

  • Degree qualified in a relevant discipline such as Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Forest Engineering, Ecology or equivalent qualification.
  • Significant experience in the Spanish environmental and overall permitting regulatory framework, requirements and stakeholders, private and public.
  • Technical leadership for the development and review of environmental impact documentation, including Strategic Environmental assessment (Evaluación Ambiental Estratégica) and Environmental Impact assessment  assessment (EIAEstudios de Impacto Ambiental) of projects in Spain,.
  • Experience in industrial sites and Integrated Environmental Authorization (Autorización Ambiental Integradaincluding “Declaración de Impacto Ambiental” or “Environmental Impact Statement”,) will also be valuable.
  • Development or review experience of environmental and social management plans (ESMP), environmental monitoring plans (“Plan de Vigilancia Ambiental” in Spain) and environmental and social management system (ESMS).
  • Proven track record of personally overseeing the delivery of major Environmental Services projects successfully in the EU market, working with multiple stakeholders, and negotiating with the highest level of the public administration bodies.
  • Wide experience in stakeholder management with relevant authorities to obtain approvals, such as river basin authorities (hydrography or “Conferencias Hidrográficas”), archaeological authoritiesy, cattle roadtracks (s or “Vías Pecuarias)”, forestry (or “Montes de Utilidad Pública)”, urban planning or “Compatibilidad Urbanística(Planeamiento)”, etc. Experience in preparing the relevant documentation will also be valuable.
  • Capacity to perform environmental monitoring duties during construction and operation phases of projects, undertaking site visits in Spain and internationally.
  • Track record in support with business development activities including identification of new opportunities, meeting with clients and preparing proposal
  • Experience of building senior client relationships, developing a pipeline of potential work, having a strategic role in major bidding and work-winning, and delivering projects for private sector and public sector clients.
  • Excellent understanding of and uncompromising passion and dedication to environmental stewardship, nature conservation & restoration, climate and sustainability issues in the built environment.
  • Collaborative and team-player approach for working closely with our planning, design and engineering colleagues to ensure environmental aspects are properly considered during all project phases.
  • Track record in support with business development activities including identification of new opportunities, meeting with clients and preparing proposals.
  • Experience of building senior client relationships, developing a pipeline of potential work, having a strategic role in major bidding and work-winning, and delivering projects for private sector and public sector clients.
  • Proven track record of personally overseeing the delivery of major Environmental Services projects successfully in the EU market, working with multiple stakeholders, and negotiating with the highest level of the public administration bodies.
  • Development or review experience of environmental and social management plans (ESMP), environmental monitoring plans (“Plan de Vigilancia Ambiental” in Spain) and environmental and social management system (ESMS).
  • Capacity to perform environmental monitoring duties during construction and operation phases of projects, undertaking site visits in Spain and internationally.
  • Strongest communication abilities in order to lead internal knowledge transfer, convey strategic messages to clients, negotiate effectively with stakeholders and position Arup as leader in the field during events, congresses, academic papers, etc.
  • Fluent in English and Spanish, comfortable leading diverse, multidisciplinary, international teams.
