Senior Economic Advisor (Dublin/Cork)

 

This is an exciting opportunity to assume a leading economic consultancy role within our Strategic Advisory Services Team in Ireland. The Strategic Advisory Services team comprises a core group of influential consultants that help clients respond to their ever-changing business needs through the creation of resilient strategies and approaches to problem solving.

 

This position leads economic thinking as part of our integrated approach to client support and will join our wider economics teams to support and deliver projects globally.

We have a broad base of both public and private clients in Ireland. Part of this role is working with these clients to appraise business strategy and to broaden economic assessments to encompass the total value of project planning and delivery.


You will be an influential leader and recognised in Ireland for your innovation and ability to respectfully challenge outmoded economic thinking. You will be capable of communicating with clarity to professional and non-economics professionals alike. You will be self-starting. You will have a minimum of ten years’ experience in economics (experience in any of the transport, water and energy sectors would be advantageous). You will be passionate about bringing change to practices and capable of working within current economic systems. You will be a highly collaborative person, able to bring people along and develop skills in the broader team. Ideally you will have both practical experience but also have moved into economic policy and may even have European Commission or World Bank experience.

 

Your responsibilities

  • Business development, client management and relationship building with public and private clients in Ireland;

  • Project Manager / Technical Leader for business case projects (focusing on approach, problem solving, technical project delivery and commercial success of projects);

  • Reviewing work and guiding the delivery of work undertaken by analysts, both within Arup and with project partners. 

  • Bid Manager for economics focussed projects (focusing on developing bid winning themes and delivering bids on time to an agreed budget).

  • Responsible for developing client networks and client care, including sharing successes and policy developments, leading panel discussions and supporting influential marketing and communications initiatives;

  • Keeping up to date with market, technical techniques and guidance developments and influencing these to be more inclusive and creating public benefit;

  • Supporting the development of a positive industry profile for Arup;

  • Developing and mentoring staff, helping develop new team skills, coordinating across multiple offices and cities;

  • The is likely to include line management of staff;

  • Promoting and encouraging excellence and quality of work in all activities performed by the Strategic Advisory Services Team; and

  • Promoting and communicating Arup’s values and setting standards of behaviour in relation to those values.

 

Your profile

 

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Recognised relevant post-graduate tertiary qualifications in an appropriate area;

  • Relevant industry recognised experience, including within a consulting business environment;

  • Expert in the use of industry guidance and techniques and a working understanding of models and analytical approaches used in the development of business cases;

  • Experienced in quantitative policy analysis as part of the policy-making process in, for example: the transport, energy or climate change portfolios;

  • Expert knowledge of leading economic models and the associated influencing skills necessary to unlock sustainable development opportunities across our target sector areas: cities, transport, energy and water;

  • Chartered membership of relevant professional institutions/professional peer bodies.


Key Experience:

  • Contributions to developing, winning and managing the delivery of new work;

  • Liaising with and presenting to clients;

  • Proven successful commercial capability;

  • Substantial knowledge and experience in government compliant business cases including appraisal and modelling approaches;

  • An awareness and interest in emerging government key sector issues, emerging priorities and critical issues.

  • Proven experience managing and developing the skills and capabilities of teams and overseeing junior staff;

  • Understanding of the economic aspects, sustainable funding / financing aspects, planning issues and business benefits of projects across our target sector areas;

  • Economic modelling experience (experience of introducing low-carbon innovative technologies within across our target sector areas would also be desirable).
