The Opportunity 

Our award-winning Business and Investor Advisory (BIA) team, recognised as the European Technical Advisor of the Year for the last four years, are seeking to recruit a professionally qualified consultant to work on a variety of projects, primarily in the nuclear energy sector. We require a consultant with sound technical and commercial expertise that can support and lead nuclear advisory projects and promote knowledge nuclear energy projects across the firm.

The candidate would fit into an established and award-winning advisory consulting team working on a range of UK and international assignments in the power generation and bioenergy sector. Our mandates range from small scale distributed generation to multi-utility portfolios spanning across large geographies. The technologies and markets that the team covers includes nuclear energy, biomass and biofuels, geothermal energy, waste to energy (including incineration, gasification, and pyrolysis), mechanical and biological treatment of waste and district heating / cogeneration facilities and networks.

We are seeking an experienced Consultant to work on advisory consulting projects with a focus on the nuclear sector, and contributing to projects across our power, bioenergy, and energy transition sectors (including distributed energy, hydrogen, thermal power and cogeneration, waste, and bioenergy). We are seeking an individual that can demonstrate their background in providing consulting or advisory services covering technical, environmental, economic, commercial, and operational issues.

The applicant should be broadly conversant with market standards in terms of key delivery roles (investors, developers, EPC and O&M contractors, equipment OEMs etc.), contracting models (e.g., NEC4), good practice design and specification, regulatory and nuclear safety considerations, and experience in delivering/advising on mitigations from a risk-focused perspective. Arup currently has key advisory roles on all major nuclear new build projects in the UK, including the UK’s ongoing deployment of new Small Modular Reactor projects, and the candidate might be expected to provide senior technical and commercial advice relating to these or other nuclear projects.

Is this role right for you? 

This role will involve some of the following responsibilities including project management of consulting or advisory projects, supporting advisory teams in providing specialist technical and/or commercial input in particular areas of experience. You will be co-ordinating, and producing technical and commercial deliverables (including reports, presentations, specifications, advisory notes, and due diligence reports). This will include reviewing or writing technical reports (condition assessment and root cause analysis etc.), drawings (layouts, process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams), specifications and contracts to understand and opine on key technical and commercial risks; and liaising with specialists to advise on risk mitigation measures.

Other aspects of your role will involve reviewing and providing technical and commercial inputs into business plans such as operating inputs (availability, thermal efficiency etc.) and capital and operating costs. You will meet with clients to present findings on existing projects and on a business development basis to discuss new opportunities. This will involve the preparation and management of bids to secure new commissions in the nuclear sector, including wider business development activities from an established external network where possible.

The role may provide opportunities for short overseas business travel, and travel around the UK!

Requirements:

  • A background in the power generation sector, ideally within an engineering, science and/or construction project management background (including project budgets, schedules and deliverables).
  • Experience within the nuclear new build, generation and/or decommissioning sectors, along with a good understanding of nuclear power’s role as a low-carbon source of electricity and its role in the wider UK energy future alongside other forms of power generation will be required.
  • Understanding of thermal power plant fundamentals, in particular the basic operating principles of light water reactors, and a basic understanding of nuclear fission and the unique considerations and requirements of the nuclear industry with regards to safety during all aspects of a nuclear power plant’s lifecycle (namely construction, commissioning, operations and decommissioning).
  • Previous experience in advisory and client-facing roles will be advantageous as this is a role that requires confidence and communication skills to represent Arup at meetings with senior members of our client teams. You will be expected to understand and translate technical information into an easily digestible form to aid client understanding.
