About the Role

The Civil team within our Canberra office is looking for a driven Senior Civil Engineer to own and deliver projects and bring fresh ideas to enhance the way we work. You will be required to liaise with internal and external teams to take a lead on coordination activities.

We are seeking a Senior Engineer to join us to help deliver a very strong pipeline of interesting and varied work across a variety of sectors including highways, rail, masterplanning/site development, major bridges, environmental and LGA-related projects. Our pipeline of work will also connect you into a network of interstate and international projects, leveraging Arup’s truly global business model and philosophy.

Ideally, you will be able to demonstrate your experience in applying a variety of civil engineering skills in a consulting environment, which could include flood risk management, drainage, sustainable drainage, earthworks, pavement design, level strategies, utilities and road designs

Responsibilities include:

  • Working without supervision, but knowing when to refer up as necessary, you will undertake design and technical consultation in areas such as roads and earthworks, pavements, stormwater including WSUD, flood risk management and utilities.
  • Your work will involve leading the civil design on small and medium sized projects, as well as being responsible for specific elements of large projects.  This will include client liaison, design, technical documentation, reporting, cost estimates, and tender submissions.
  • In achieving this you will be responsible for scheduling work to meet deadlines, monitoring budgets and resourcing and controlling expenditure to meet financial targets in your own area.
  • You will represent Arup at internal and external meetings and events and you may be responsible for designing and delivering events, activities and projects which impact the business.
  • You may be responsible for the performance and development of others through providing guidance, training, direction and feedback.
  • Responsible for preparing proposals for civil engineering services in response to a client brief, including scoping Arup’s inputs, setting budgets; and negotiating agreements, referring up for support as necessary.
  • You will take a longer term strategic view of the business and contribute to the development plan of Arup.

About you and your profile for success:

  • Recognised degree in Civil Engineering
  • Knowledge and understanding in various areas of Civil Engineering, such as:
    • Stormwater including Water Quality
    • Erosion and Sediment Control
    • Water Quality
    • Earthworks
    • Highways, Roads
    • Utilities
  • Membership of relevant professional institutions/professional peer bodies (including achieving or working towards Chartered Status from the Institution of Engineers Australia)
  • Relevant industry experience in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on designing roads, drainage, WSUD elements and utilities within a consulting business environment;
  • Experience in the operation of software design tools including 12D and/or Civil 3D, and in the operation of AutoCAD on Infrastructure projects would be advantageous;
  • Experience using hydraulic modelling packages (in particular 12D Drainage and/or Drains) would be advantageous.
  • Ability to remain positively motivated and foster team spirit at times of significant pressure, including assisting others to meet deadlines
  • Desire to excel and widen experience in civil design/engineering skills
