Seismic Engineer - Internship

Arup Italia is looking for an Undergraduate or Graduate in Civil and Geotechnical Engineer to join for a six month internship our Geotechnical and Infrastructure team in the Milan office.


Currently enrolled in the last year of MsC, or graduated within 12 months of the start date of this internship. The approximate dates of this internship are October 2020 through mid November 2020. Interns must be fully available for the 6 months duration of the internship.

Skills and experience


  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural or Geotechnical Engineering / Bachelor’s degree in Geological Sciences 
  • Master’s degree in Civil, Structural or Geotechnical Engineering
  • Seismic engineering
  • Fundamentals in seismic geotechnical engineering
  • Basic knowledge of statistics
  • Basic knowledge of national and international codes
  • Basic knowledge in programming language (such as Python, Matlab) is recommended
  • Ability in numerical analyses would be an advantage
  • Fluency in both written and spoken Italian and English language. Knowledge in any other language would be an advantage.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication (both written and verbal) skills
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills;
  • Highly motivated and willing to take on new challenges
  • Enthusiasm for international working


As an Intern Seismic Engineer, you will work under close supervision. You will learn and apply the following skills:

  • Perform seismic hazard assessment
  • Selection of time-histories for structural analyses
  • Seismic risk assessment
  • Coordinating with multiple disciplines and working in conjunction with project managers to help complete assigned tasks.
  • Writing reports for internal and external purposes based on findings
  • Presenting technical material in traditional and innovative ways for review by technical and non-technical audiences
  • Understanding trends and best practices in the geotechnical industry
  • Developing new or existing tools
