The Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to work with delivery teams supporting major projects in India and the Middle East.  We are an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services. Through our work, we make a positive difference in the world.

You will play a key role in the Rail Systems Team, supporting the technical delivery and performance of rolling stock projects. You will report to the Rolling Stock Engineer and Senior Rolling Stock Engineer, assisting in the coordination of project activities, contributing technical input, and collaborating closely with other disciplines to ensure effective and integrated project delivery.

In this role, you will support the end‑to‑end design, specification, and integration of rolling stock—including locomotives, metro cars, EMUs, DMUs, and wagons—from concept through to commissioning. You’ll contribute to preparing technical specifications aligned with Indian and international standards such as RDSO, EN, UIC, and BS, while assisting in the evaluation of key mechanical and electrical subsystems including carbodies, bogies, traction equipment, braking systems, couplers, doors, HVAC, and pneumatic systems. The role also involves supporting assurance activities such as performance analysis, stress and crashworthiness assessments, vehicle dynamics, gauging, and RAMS. Collaboration is central, requiring close coordination with multidisciplinary teams across signalling, track, power, and systems to ensure seamless integration. You’ll take part in design reviews, provide quality‑assurance support at manufacturing sites, and help manage regulatory engagement with authorities such as RDSO and other statutory bodies to secure approvals and maintain compliance. Alongside contributing to safe, timely, and high‑quality project delivery, you’ll participate in client workshops and meetings, work effectively with global teams, and support the development of colleagues. The role also includes preparing technical documentation, contributing to feasibility and sustainability studies, and promoting innovative approaches to rolling stock design.

The successful candidate will be based in our Bangalore office supporting India and global teams (primarily in the Middle East).

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas.

You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for someone who has:

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (BEng/BSc), with a master’s or specialisation in Railway Engineering considered an advantage; working toward Chartered Engineer status is beneficial.

  • At least seven years of post‑graduate experience, including a minimum of four years on rolling stock projects in India or internationally, with familiarity in procurement, requirements management, specification development, and supplier coordination.#

  • A strong understanding of Indian (RDSO, IRS) and international (EN, UIC, BS, UAE, KSA) standards, along with knowledge of regulatory and statutory approval processes; ability to develop and review technical documentation, test reports, and compliance submissions.

  • Effective collaboration and communication skills, with experience supporting clients and stakeholders, working in multidisciplinary environments, and coordinating interfaces across teams; knowledge of depot design, maintenance planning, or asset management systems is desirable.

  • A willingness to travel within India and internationally to support project delivery, client engagement, and supplier or site activities.
