Joining Arup

As technical advisors, our rail systems engineers support our clients to undertake a forensic assessment of the entire rail system – from track, power, communications, signalling and control to rolling stock and the full spectrum of technologies available for any rail system. We then work through the entire rail lifecycle to identify and set the systemwide requirements, develop a feasible concept of operations, design tender and procurement requirements, develop systems assurance and integration processes and lead the testing and commissioning phase to bring new services into entry.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a passionate, experienced and collaborative project leader to work in our Rail Systems team who is highly motivated and has a desire to work on interesting and challenging railway projects.

Reporting to our Systems & Operations Team Leader, you will work on a wide variety of rail projects both in the UK and internationally. These projects range from small assignments, for example carrying out research, analysis or problem-solving for a client on rail systems integration and assurance, to “mega-projects” such as the systems supporting the modernisation of an entire rail network over many years.

We are keen to recruit specialists who are curious to learn and not afraid to work across disciplines to deliver the best outcomes for our clients. While focussed on technical systems, an important part of the role is to ensure the rail systems we advise on deliver the outcomes needed for the customer and value for money.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?

As Rail Systems Project Leader, we are looking for someone who can apply systems thinking and experience to the client challenges we support. Preferably the individual will have in depth experience in one or more disciplines including railway operations, rolling stock, and rail systems assets (signalling and control systems, power or track), as well as a broad understanding of how these disciplines interact as a system. The person will also have good knowledge of railway systems integration and have an in-depth understanding of the potential pit falls and solutions for railway systems to operate reliably with the interactions between infrastructure, power and rolling stock.

The role also includes supporting senior rail systems specialists to improve the integration of our existing rail systems team and support the development of technical capability both upskilling members and identifying key recruitment needed to ensure core competencies.  The position offers to work alongside some of the most talented people who share your ambition to make a difference, scope for personal skills development together with being the example for more junior members of the team.

The suitable candidate will hold a relevant degree or masters-level qualification and be a Chartered Engineer or equivalent.

You will have good knowledge of railway systems principles and processes, and practical experience applying them, and in addition a depth of knowledge and experience in at least one relevant railway discipline, for example, systems, rolling stock or assets (signalling, power or track).

We are looking for the following skills and knowledge;

  • You will have a network in the UK industry and a developing international network
  • Skills to lead and project manage multidiscipline teams to deliver successful outcomes.
  • Experience in developing staff through career planning, training, mentoring and coaching activities.
  • Ability to demonstrate purposeful relationships with clients and stakeholders.
  • You are an innovator and in addition, you will have had experience in creating teams that encourage innovation.
