The Opportunity
We are looking for a Rail System Safety & RAMS Leader to lead the Arup offering across Technical Services & Transport Portfolios in UKIMEA. The role will encompass developing the current business, leading and growing the team, and technical direction across the area of system safety and RAMS. This will include all aspects of the discipline including assurance and integration with wider rail systems engineering.
The key aspects of the role are as follows:
- To lead the Arup offering in all areas of System Safety and RAMS.
- To lead the team based in UKIMEA, monitoring and planning resource needs and ensuring the correct level of skill and capability is brought to each project.
- To coordinate the activities of the professionals to act both as input to multi-disciplinary and specialist single discipline commissions
- To provide technical direction, review and sign-off, for work done.
- To lead the development of the business within UKIMEA and the other regions.
- To instigate and oversee the training and staff development.
- To ensure our work is carried out in a safe and reliable way, which is commensurate with a caring professional organisation.
You will lead and engage in promotional activities across the wider industry and motivate others in the project team and within the Group. In a project role you will also act as either a Project Manager or Technical Director.
As the leader you will oversee the production, checking and approval of high-quality design solutions, reports, specifications and drawings which cover a range of project requirements. To do this you will initiate and lead on management processes to assist in the efficient delivery of our services and deliverables, monitor and review progress and performance, ensuring that project timescales and targets are met. You will liaise with other Arup rail staff in the region and overseas.
As part of the senior management team you will contribute to winning and delivering more work of both expert and mainstream type to Arup, across the region and globally. Liaising directly with major clients regularly you will contribute in the growth of rail capability in Arup by engaging with them and demonstrating our capabilities.
You will select and prepare bids, tenders, and conditions of engagement, and control investment spend in the bid/tendering process.
With your established and future network of contacts in rail you will promote strategic relationships and deliver business opportunities with the LTA, contractors, local authorities, train operators, partners, and academia in UKIMEA and overseas.
We pride ourselves on technical quality and innovation and you will provide excellent engineering skills and technical knowledge of railway design and System Safety and RAMS, within an environment of high quality and timeliness. You and colleagues will provide technical guidance for the production of feasibility studies, scheme and detailed designs, together with advice, feasibility, design, operation and input to the design and construction of rail and related projects in the region and globally.
You will develop, mentor, shape and guide less experienced staff and support management colleagues in their technical development. Our skills networks are global and you will interact with these and encourage staff to contribute and benefit from them.

Is this role right for you?
We’re looking for a candidate who can demonstrate:
- Experience in UK and overseas rail industry.
- Background as a System Safety and RAMS Leader for rail design and industry research projects, providing excellent engineering skills and technical knowledge of railway design within an environment of high quality and timeliness.
- Leadership and promotion of strong, strategic relationships and the growth and delivery of business/service opportunities with clients, including Design and Build Contractors, Rail Operators, and Rail Asset Owners.
- Excellent people and team leadership skills and ability to act as an effective team and rail service leader operating with enthusiasm and a sense of purpose for the successful delivery of projects, the businesses, and Arup.
- Track record and a passion to recruit, mentor, motivate and develop the skills of team members at all grades learning on the job providing guidance, training and feedback and recommending appropriate training.
- Expertise in selection and preparation of bids, tenders, and conditions of engagement, and control investment spend in the bid/tendering and business development process.
- Solid understanding of the relevant system safety and RAMS UK and international railway legislation, codes and standards e.g. ROGS, CSMs, EN 50126/8/9
- Chartered membership of an appropriate professional body e.g. IMechE / IET
