We are currently seeking a Rail Electrical Engineer with specialised skills in rail lineside electrical design to join our Rail Team in York to work with multidisciplinary teams delivering a portfolio of exciting, varied rail projects as part of an established Rail Business.

You will be part of a team responsible for the successful delivery of our design commissions for major clients including Network Rail, Contractors, Suppliers and other agencies such as Train Operators, Councils, Passenger Transport Executives and academic institutions.

The Role -  What we're looking for in you

We are looking for a passionate Rail Electrical Engineer, with a sound technical knowledge of lineside electrical design to be part our North West & Yorkshire Rail team that is highly motivated and with a desire to tackle interesting problems with the opportunity of finding innovative solutions.

Ensuring the successful delivery of technically excellent multidisciplinary rail projects and bids across our UK portfolio, you will be responsible for, and typical activities will include:

·      Determining the Lineside Electrical design requirements from our client brief and be able to make sound decisions and propose the right design solution.

·      Produce the required Lineside Electrical design to multidisciplinary design teams on large or medium sized projects.

·      Checking the Lineside Electrical designs and calculations within implementation and renewal projects.

·      Sharing knowledge, best practice and innovation across our business, providing guidance, training and feedback with other related disciplines and skills, locally and across the UK

·      You will have the freedom to work independently, managing your own personal development utilising our in house and external training opportunities.

·      As we foster a strong development culture across our business, you will also be involved in some mentoring of more junior employees.

Current multidisciplinary projects across various GRIP Stages and include Transpennine Route Upgrade, Brent Cross, Headbolt Lane and Midland Main Line Electrification.

The position offers scope for personal skill development, especially in relation to increasing of rail electrical expertise within a Rail environment and also mentoring more junior members of the team. The focus will be on developing existing skills and experience and sharing this experience with other team members, in a stimulating and testing project environment, and so enhancing Arup’s overall electrification engineering and rail capability.

Relationships

Reporting to our Lineside Electrical Team Leader and supported by our discipline Technical Head, you will work with project teams of Railway and Infrastructure Engineers at bid and project delivery stage. You will also develop relationships with our wider electrical and rail communities and our client’s engineering, assurance and project teams.

Essential Skills and Knowledge

• Experience in the production and self-checking of E&P Lineside Electricial Feasibility, Scheme and Detailed Design reports, layouts, schematics and calculations (including Points Heating, 650V Signalling Power, Domestic Power Supplies, Earthing and Bonding) within multidisciplinary rail projects.
• Competent in the production of drawings using CAD (e.g. Bentley MicroStation) software.
• Competent in the use of calculation software (e.g. Amtech and ETAP).

Desirable Skills and Knowledge

• Experience in undertaking site surveys / site visits and reporting on asset condition.
• Experience of construction methods and installation.
• Knowledge of HV (e.g. 6.6kV and 11kV) and other railway systems.
• Knowledge and experience in the lighting of railway infrastructure (e.g. Depots, Level Crossings, Station platforms etc.)

Qualifications

• An appropriate degree or equivalent qualification.
• Ideally, an associate member of the IET.
• Working toward Chartered Engineer with the IET or similar would be an advantage.
