Joining Arup

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach have set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

Our North Rail team brings together multidisciplinary specialists to help deliver complex and transformative rail projects across the UK. Our current portfolio includes ScotRail Intercity Replacement Fleet Depot Enhancements, TransPennine Route Upgrade West of Leeds, Northern Powerhouse Rail and Metro to Washington.

We are looking for a Rail Civils Engineer to join our growing team. This is an opportunity to build your technical expertise while contributing to the design and delivery of multidisciplinary rail projects that create successful outcomes for our clients and the communities they serve.

The Opportunity

As a Rail Civils Engineer, you will work within our integrated Rail Civils design team, contributing to the development and delivery of safe, efficient and practical civil engineering solutions across a varied portfolio of railway projects.

You will use your technical knowledge and engineering judgement to interpret client requirements, develop and assess design options, undertake calculations and technical analysis, and produce engineering layouts, reports and project documentation. Working collaboratively with colleagues from across Arup’s rail disciplines, you will help ensure designs are coordinated and effectively integrated throughout the project lifecycle.

The role offers excellent opportunities to further develop your civil engineering, rail design and design management capabilities. Supported by experienced colleagues, you will build on your existing experience, take increasing ownership of technical tasks and contribute to the continued development of Arup’s rail capability. You will also have opportunities to share knowledge and best practice across the wider business and support the development of colleagues.

We welcome curiosity around new ways of working, including an interest in digital tools, automation, coding or AI and how these can be used to improve design quality, efficiency and collaboration.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for people who:

·       Have experience producing and checking rail civils feasibility, scheme and detailed designs, including reports, layouts, drawings and calculations within multidisciplinary rail projects.

·       Have a degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent relevant experience, with a sound foundation in technical design and are ideally working towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status with a relevant professional institution.

·       Have experience with Bentley MicroStation and ProjectWise, including producing and checking drawings within Common Data Environments.

·       Have knowledge of relevant Network Rail standards, RSSB Railway Industry Standards, CDM and CSM requirements, with the ability to apply appropriate engineering judgement to project work.

·       Enjoy working collaboratively in a client-facing and multidisciplinary environment, building strong relationships, communicating technical information clearly and contributing to the development of colleagues.
