We are currently seeking an individual to work within a multidisciplinary team delivering a portfolio of exciting, national and international rail projects as part of an established and expanding Rail Business.

 

You will be part of a team responsible for the successful delivery of our design commissions for our major clients including Network Rail, HS2, Contractors and other agencies such as Train Operators, Councils, Passenger Transport Executives and academic institutions.

 

Current high-profile projects include Transpennine Route Upgrade, Depot remodelling, Signalling renewals, Station Upgrades, HS2, Scotland Enhancements and a range of GRIP Stage 1-8 / ES1-4 commissions for Network Rail and National Transport Bodies. The role will also support a growing range of works in Europe, Canada and Australasia where the expansion of low carbon transport solutions is continuing to grow.

  

Role - What we're looking for in you


Arup has been at the forefront of developing innovative and sustainable solutions for new and existing rail transport systems. As the need for greener transport expands globally the development of solutions that maximise the use of existing networks or create new is expanding. 

 

Ensuring the successful leadership and delivery of technically excellent multidisciplinary rail projects and bids across our UK Rail portfolio, we are looking for a Project Director/Head of Track with established experience in providing professional head leadership and leading a range of track programmes including high speed slab systems, conventional and metro schemes. The successful candidate will be an integral part of leading within our UK Rail Systems team with a motivation to tackle interesting problems, finding innovative solutions and to deliver meaningful work with successful client outcomes.

 

  • Project Director for multidisciplinary rail projects, focusing on our client relationship, technically excellent delivery, and commercial success.
  • Working with External and Internal teams
  • Taking on the role of Professional Head and Leading the UKIMEA Track team
  • Working as part of the Rail leadership team, developing and implementing the strategy and vision for our Rail Business, supporting greater integration of Arup’s work across the UK and beyond.
  • Keeping up-to-date with market developments, anticipating market changes, and assessing opportunities for influencing client outcomes, winning new work and leading the excellent delivery of that work.
  • Developing and maintaining close relationships with key stakeholders on our projects, identifying their strategic project priorities in order to position Arup for future work.
  • Developing a positive industry profile in this market for Arup and specifically for the Rail business.
  • Promoting and communicating Arup’s values and setting standards of behaviour and accountability for staff in relation to those values.
  • Developing, mentoring and coaching staff, ensuring that new team skills are developed in relation to new market opportunities.
  • Promoting and encouraging excellence and quality of work in all activities performed by the Rail team.

You will have the freedom to work independently, managing your own personal development utilising our in house and external training opportunities.  As we foster a strong development culture across our business, you will also be involved in mentoring more junior staff.  

This leadership position offers scope for personal skill development, especially in relation to increasing multidisciplinary engineering design management and advisory experience. The focus will be on developing existing engineering design management skills and the collaborative integration of multidisciplinary designs, in a stimulating and challenging project environment.

 

Relationships

 

Reporting to your Team Leader and supported by our team of discipline Technical Heads you will lead and work with our rail design teams throughout bid and project stages. You will also develop relationships with our wider engineering community, Globally, and our client’s engineering and project teams.

 

Essential Skills and Knowledge 

  • Focus on delivery high quality, technically robust, sustainable, value for money client outcomes
  • Substantial knowledge and experience in Rail Design project delivery and the wider Rail Industry.
  • Comfortable developing, winning and leading the delivery of multidisciplinary Rail Design projects at all GRIP / ES Stages, leading diverse multidisciplinary teams.
  • A strong professional profile, reputation and active client network in the Rail Industry.
  • Track record of looking forward and anticipating future issues which will affect clients, combined with the ability to translate this information into projects.
  • Proven experience leading and developing the skills, capabilities and diversity of multidisciplinary teams.
  • Competent understanding of appropriate safety process and the interfaces between the design, construction and maintenance.

Desirable Skills and Knowledge 

  • Track record and a passion to lead, mentor, motivate and develop the skills of team members at all grades
  • Understanding of the economic aspects, funding aspects, planning issues and business benefits of transport and rail planning.
  • Proven successful commercial, operational and business capability.
  • An awareness and interest in major transport issues, emerging priorities and critical issues, as part of a wider rail agenda.
  • Leading the production of engineering design management control tools and use of technical reporting processes to Senior Management.
  • Interest or experience of digital automation, coding and data analytics techniques

Qualifications

  • An appropriate HND, university degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Membership of the ICE, IET or similar
  • Incorporated or Chartered member of the ICE, IET or similar.
