The Opportunity:

We are looking for a Senior civil engineer, with broad skills in civil engineering to join our successful infrastructure team in Sheffield.  You will join a close-knit team of 15 civil engineers based in Sheffield that work collaboratively as part of our wider 100 people strong team across North West and Yorkshire sub-region.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a range of projects for commercial and public sector clients, including overseas projects. You will play an active role in all stages of our projects, across a number of sectors. Projects are wide ranging and currently include redevelopment of Sheffield Heart of the City II retail scheme, new lineside civils along the Transpennine Route Upgrade programme, amended urban highway schemes and masterplanning for University’s.

As well as working with the civil engineering team you will be also working with a wide range of other specialists, particularly the Railways, Energy, Geotechnical, Environment, Buildings and Planning teams who are based with us in our Sheffield office.   You will also be working with Arup people across the UK and overseas. You will be based in Arup’s Sheffield office.  You will sit in the civil engineering team there but may be asked to work for periods in other Arup offices in the sub-region including Manchester, Leeds, York, Cumbria and Liverpool.  You will be asked to visit client and collaborators offices for meetings, and where appropriate to visit sites.  This may include opportunities to work overseas. The role is hybrid, you will be visiting the office 2-3 times a week.

Duties will include:

You will act as a leader, integrating, coordinating, and guiding the team. You will direct the design process and carrying out civil engineering design. You will use your analytical, creative and conceptual thinking to evaluate of options and make decisions. In addition, you will be working with other Arup colleagues, collaborators and clients and generate mutual agreeable outcomes.

Additionally, you will be responsible for writing official documents for internal and external use, and you will define parts of design projects and individual projects, including the commercial aspects of these elements / projects.

Furthermore, you will be responsible for organising events, activities, processes, and/or small internal business projects. As well as mentoring the development of younger engineers within the team, checking the quality and accuracy of own and others’ work and, you will be on charge of the supervision of others carrying out civil and structure engineering design. And finally, you will represent the team both internally and externally.

Desirable skills

  • Proficient knowledge of AutoCAD or Microstation CAD packages and design software packages (GSA, Oasys packages) spreadsheets and GIS, 3D environment.
  • Understanding of drainage design, utility design, and highway design.
  • Experience of developing solutions with varying levels of detail from masterplanning phase through to construction information.
  • Manage own and others' time, ensuring the production of projects and design deliverables to agreed deadlines and within budget.
  • Ability to respond to Project Manager and Client requests and meet challenging deadlines. And proven ability to write accurate, clear, high-quality reports in English.

Qualifications

  • You will have an appropriate HND, university degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering.
  • A Chartered Civil Engineer (CEng MICE) or close to gaining professional membership with the ICE or similar.
