We are currently seeking an Electrification Engineer with specialised skills in OLE Catenary System Design to join our Electrification Team York to work with multidisciplinary teams delivering a portfolio of exciting, varied rail projects as part of an established Rail Business.  You will be part of a team responsible for the successful delivery of our design commissions for major clients including Network Rail, Contractors, Suppliers and other agencies such as Train Operators, Councils, Passenger Transport Executives and academic institutions.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a passionate Electrification Engineer, with a sound technical knowledge of catenary system design to be part our North West & Yorkshire Rail Electrification team that is highly motivated and with a desire to tackle interesting problems with the opportunity of finding innovative solutions.  

Ensuring the successful delivery of technically excellent multidisciplinary rail projects and bids across our UK portfolio, you will be responsible for, and typical activities will include; Determining the OLE design requirements from our client brief and be able to make sound decisions and propose the right design solution; Produce the required OLE design to multidisciplinary design teams on large or medium sized projects; Checking the OLE designs and calculations within implementation and renewal projects; Sharing knowledge, best practice and innovation across our business, providing guidance, training and feedback with other related disciplines and skills, locally and across the UK.  

Current multidisciplinary projects across various GRIP Stages and include Transpennine Route Upgrade, Brent Cross, Headbolt Lane and Midland Main Line Electrification. 

The position offers scope for personal skill development, especially in relation to increasing of Electrification expertise within a Rail environment and also mentoring more junior members of the team. The focus will be on developing existing skills and experience and sharing this experience with other team members, in a stimulating and challenging project environment, and so enhancing Arup’s overall electrification engineering and rail capability.

Is this role right for you?

The ideal candidate will hold an appropriate degree or equivalent qualification. Ideally, a member of the IMechE or IET. Chartered Engineer with the IMechE or IET or similar would be an advantage.   

You will have experience in the production of Overhead Line Equipment Feasibility, Scheme and Detailed Design reports, layouts, schematics and calculations (including switch and crossing renewal and remodelling, cross-sections, sectioning, bills of qualities, Earthing and Bonding) within multi-disciplinary rail projects. In addition, they would also be competent in allocation design, including UKMS design range, have experience of earthing and Bonding Design and in undertaking electrical clearance assessments. Lastly they would require competency in the use of design software (e.g. Linear Draft).  

Desirable Skills and Knowledge include; Experience in undertaking site surveys / site visits and reporting on asset condition; Understanding of Third Rail and other railway electrification systems. Comprehension and experience in Traction Supply and Distribution; Understanding of structural and geotechnical principles associated with OLE equipment design.
