The role

We are currently recruiting a Senior Project Manager to join the Arup Project and Programme Management Team in London. 
The role is initially to bolster the existing team delivering complex infrastructure projects within the energy UK market in both the private and public sector. We are specifically looking for an individual to fulfil active project leadership and contract administration roles on large and complex projects more than £100m in construction value. The role requires someone to take the lead in delivering the project and being recognised as such within the client organisation and its external stakeholders.

The role may be required to work as part of a programme of investment reporting to the Programme Delivery Director, who may be from the client organisation or from within Arup. It is likely that the role will be working as a member of combined and integrated team comprising several organisations.

People skills

•    Bring the project team together to meet defined project objectives, even when only limited contractual leverage is available
•    Motivate and organise project team members towards a common objective
•    Identify stakeholders, determine requirements and expectations and manage their influence on the project
•    Maintain excellent relations with clients even during challenging moments, keeping them regularly appraised of the progress of their projects
•    Report at Project Board level meetings and answer questions accordingly
•    Ensure line manager is kept informed about key issues.

Technical skills

Project controls

•    Sets the overall project programme in conjunction with client and Arup in-house planners
•    Sets the programme for each major phase of work
•    Works with specialist planners to produce a Master Project Programme within scheduling software such MS Project, Asta Power Project or Primavera P6
•    Interrogates construction schedules, identifying opportunities for acceleration and improved delivery efficiency
•    Monitors progress of the Contractor against the accepted programme and manages the impact of progress on the Master Project Programme
•    Manages compliance with the construction contract and Works Information requirements
•    Administers the construction contract utilising appropriate contract mechanisms as required through contract administration software
•    Manages the design and supervisor teams during the construction period to review compliance with the Works Information and quality standards
•    Reviews and reports on progress against programme on a regular basis, identifying Early Warnings when appropriate.
•    Manages the processes involved in estimating, budgeting, and controlling costs
•    Manages the change control procedure
•    Manages interfaces with other projects and operations where the project is being built in an operational environment in manufacturing, process engineering or energy generation/transmission
•    Manages major procurement exercises in compliance with contract and public sector procurement requirements
•    Works collaboratively with the cost management and contractor teams to ensure complete transparency of procurement exercises
•    Manages monthly payment application and certifies payments, agreeing deductions as justified
•    Manage the procurement process for the main construction contract in line with the adopted procurement strategy
•    Actively manages project risks and supports the regular undertaking of quantitative risk analysis by risk specialists within the project team.

Health and safety

•    Leads the development and maintenance of a “safety first” culture within the project team and its supply chain
•    Carries out site visits to ascertain that high standards of health and safety are being applied on site
•    Ensures that all incidents and near misses associated with the project are investigated by a competent person and satisfies themselves that matters are adequately concluded and that lessons are being learnt 

Quality and design management

•    Manages the client’s design team to deliver the design or employer requirements and specifications aligned to the project brief to programme
•    Interrogates design schedules, identifying opportunities for acceleration and improved delivery efficiency
•    Supports the client in reviewing the design to facilitate value for the client and acts as a ‘critical friend’ to the design team
•    Manages Value Engineering exercises, identifying opportunities within the design with the project team.


•    Identifies & recommends appropriate project delivery strategies to the client
•    Maintains a register that allows issues to be easily communicated to others
•    Authors monthly client reports identifying key issues, matters for resolution and provides a clear and effective mechanism for exception reporting.

Requirements and skills

•    Professional qualification in a construction industry related discipline
•    Excellent communication and relationship building skills within a large project team environment
•    Ability to build relationships with clients and deliver excellent client care within a complex stakeholder environment
•    Excellent team player with an ability to bring together individuals to achieve a common objective
•    Self-starting attitude and an ability to work independently as well as part of a large project team
•    Experience of solving complex issues through analysis, the development of suitable solutions and the implementation of these solutions
•    Experience of delivering infrastructure facilities from a client project management perspective and within an operational site
•    Experience should have been gained on projects of at least £100m construction value, ideally delivering new facilities in energy generation or transmission
•    Experience of the design, procurement and construction phases of a project is required
•    Experience of managing the delivery of social value from a project, such as the creation of apprenticeships and assisting people to prepare themselves for opportunities for employment.
•    Knowledgeable in construction health and safety practices and regulations, and influential in the health and safety culture of an organisation at programme management level
