 Joining Arup

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 80 years. Dedicated to sustainable development, Arup is a collective of designers, consultants and experts working globally. Founded to be humane and excellent, we collaborate with our clients and partners using imagination, technology, and rigour to shape a better world.

The Opportunity

We are offering an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer who is on the cusp of achieving chartered status. If you thrive on technically stimulating work and have a passion for cutting-edge projects, we invite you to join our creative and friendly Building Engineering Team in London as a permanent member.

As part of our team, you’ll be involved in shaping some of the most innovative buildings worldwide. Our focus lies in the realm of technical buildings, where engineering plays a pivotal role in defining the overall building design. Our diverse portfolio spans across sectors such as science, healthcare, data centres, industrial, and commercial.

Recent projects within our team showcase our expertise, including multiple University of Cambridge laboratory projects, the prestigious Francis Crick Institute, AstraZeneca’s campus in Cambridge, a state-of-the-art eye hospital in central London, and several cutting-edge data centres for global technology giants. Additionally, we’ve contributed to manufacturing facilities for renowned brands, crafted strategic master plans, and conducted impactful decarbonization studies.

Our team is actively engaged in global projects, spanning from the initial feasibility stage to the practical completion. Our work is strategically divided between two key areas:

  • New Build Developments: We contribute to the creation of cutting-edge building, envisioning and constructing innovative spaces that meet the demands of the future.
  • Retrofit and Refurbishment Projects: Recognizing the importance of sustainability, we focus on revitalizing existing buildings. By implementing sustainable solutions, we not only enhance functionality but also reduce the carbon impact of our clients’ properties.

Is this role right for you?

You will be actively involved in driving the design and delivery of building services systems with experience in all aspects of your discipline as well as developing system strategies, including communication with the project team and relevant parties.

  • Take a Considered Approach: Approach all design problems thoughtfully to deliver collaborative, technically excellent outcomes for our projects.
  • Systems Expertise: Work on systems such as air conditioning, heating, natural and mechanical ventilation, and building controls. Understand their environmental impact and collaborate across disciplines to minimize it. This includes contributing to decarbonization strategies.
  • Coordination Across Disciplines: Coordinating your work with that of other disciplines, including in-house specialists.
  • Resource Planning: Predict and plan resources and associated costs/fees based on a fundamental understanding of operating costs.
  • Mentoring and Guidance: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced team members.
  • Professional Development: Proactively manage your own professional growth.

Requirements

You are an enthusiastic engineer who thrives in collaborative, multi-professional design teams. Taking ownership of projects from inception to completion, you consistently achieve outstanding results. Your active pursuit of chartership demonstrates your commitment to excellence in the field of Building Services Engineering. With a diverse background, you bring hands-on experience in systems, installations, and various project sectors. Key requirements are:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and passion for sustainable building design, focusing on energy efficiency and carbon reduction. You actively challenge yourself and collaborate with the design team to achieve optimal project outcomes.
  • Possess a creative and inquisitive mindset, extending your interest beyond your own discipline. You integrate diverse requirements into holistically coordinated solutions.
  • Proficiency in using energy modelling software, ideally IES, and 3D modelling software, Revit.
  • Effective communication skills, enabling you to present and explain your design decisions clearly.
  • Interest in leveraging digital tools to streamline workflows and enhance efficiency.
