Materials Specialist

We are looking for an Infrastructure Materials Specialist to join our Specialist Technology, Analysis and Research (STAR) team. We are looking for someone with a background in materials science and a strong interest in infrastructure materials, particularly concrete and steel. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of a Senior Materials Specialist, with support from regional practitioners and a global network of experts.

The mix of work will include specialist advice on durability design, problem investigation, specification writing and review, materials decarbonization strategies, and much more. You will be encouraged to pursue relevant research projects, including in partnership with industry and/or academia. Your involvement will vary from a brief phone conversation to being an integral part of the project team and may require occasional overseas travel, including to the United States. You will be exposed to a variety of projects, applications and construction types.

You will have the opportunity and will be encouraged to develop expertise in particular materials to suit your interests and to complement existing expertise within the team. The position will also provide the opportunity to develop your technical, project management, asset management and business development skills.

-    Demonstrable interest in materials engineering for infrastructure projects, and desire to specialize in this area
-    Awareness of durability design strategies for steel and reinforced and unreinforced concrete
-    Awareness of relevant Canadian and USA standards, and knowledge of materials specifications
-    Awareness of sustainability impacts of reinforced concrete and steel over their lifecycle, and knowledge of embodied carbon reduction strategies and related performance impacts
-    Awareness of related materials and products, e.g. waterproofing, admixtures and additives
-    Good report writing and presentation skills
-    Desire to engage with standards committees and technical groups from CSA, CISC, American Concrete Institute, ASTM, Post-Tensioning Institute, or similar
-    Willingness to travel occasionally, e.g. site visits

Is this role right for you?
-    At least a master’s degree in a relevant subject, such as civil, structural or materials engineering
-    P. Eng. qualification preferred but not required
-    Preferred but not required:
o    Practical knowledge of concrete condition assessment and repair
o    Knowledge of material characterization and testing
o    Knowledge of construction techniques and experience on a construction site
o    Supply chain experience or experience in material R&D
o    Knowledge in 3D concrete printing or other advanced construction methods
o    Knowledge of or interest in other materials and their use in the built environment, such as non-ferrous metals, masonry, glass, stone, or ceramics

Toronto Hiring Range – Hiring Range - The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in Torontos $70,000to $85,000per year.. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of Toronto will differ.

Arup recherche un(e) spécialiste en matériaux d’infrastructure pour joindre son équipe spécialisée en technologie, analyse et recherche (STAR). Dans le cadre de ses fonctions, le candidat sera appelé à fournir ses conseils d’expert sur la durabilité en conception, l'analyse des défauts et des problèmes, la rédaction et la revue de devis techniques, les stratégies de décarbonisation des matériaux, et plus encore. Le candidat sera également encouragé à poursuivre des projets de recherche pertinents, en partenariat avec l’industrie ou le milieu universitaire. Il aura autant à réaliser de brefs entretiens téléphoniques qu’à occuper un rôle de premier plan au sein de l’équipe de projet, et pourra effectuer des déplacements occasionnels à l'étranger, notamment aux États-Unis. En outre, il sera exposé à une diversité de projets, d’applications et de types de construction.

Le candidat sera encouragé à développer une expertise plus pointue relative à d’autres matériaux, en fonction de ses intérêts et en complément de l'expertise actuelle de l'équipe. Le poste permettra également au candidat d’élargir ses compétences techniques, de gestion de projet, de gestion des actifs et de développement des affaires.

-  Connaissance des normes et des codes canadiens et américains en vigueur, et des spécifications des matériaux;

-   Connaissance des impacts du béton armé et de l'acier sur le développement durable tout au long de leur cycle de vie; connaissance des stratégies de réduction du carbone intrinsèque et des effets corollaires sur la performance;

-  Connaissance des matériaux et des produits connexes (imperméabilisants, adjuvants, additifs, mélanges, etc.);

-  Aptitudes en rédaction et aisance à faire des présentations;

-  Volonté de participer aux travaux de divers comités de normalisation et groupes techniques, notamment l’Association canadienne de normalisation (CSA), l’Institut canadien de la construction en acier (ICCA), l’American Concrete Institute (ACI), l’American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), le Post-Tensioning Institute (PTI) ou tout autre organisme équivalent;

-  Volonté d’effectuer des déplacements occasionnels (par ex., des visites de chantiers ou autres).

Êtes-vous la personne qu’il nous faut ?

-  Maîtrise dans un domaine pertinent, préférablement en génie civil, génie des structures ou génie des matériaux, un atout;

-  Titre d’ingénieur reconnu, un atout.

  Atouts:

o   Connaissance pratique en évaluation de l’état du béton et en réparation du béton;

o   Connaissance des techniques de caractérisation des matériaux et des protocoles d’essai sur les matériaux;

o   Connaissance des méthodes de construction et expérience sur les chantiers;

o   Connaissance de la chaîne d’approvisionnement ou expérience en recherche et développement (R&D) sur les matériaux;

o   Connaissance de l’impression 3D du béton ou d’autres méthodes de construction avancées pertinentes;

o   Intérêt marqué pour d’autres matériaux et leur utilisation au sein de l’environnement bâti, notamment les métaux non-ferreux, la maçonnerie, le verre, la pierre ou la brique.
