The U.S. East Managing Principal leads more than 600 extraordinary professionals in one of the largest business units within the Americas. Based in New York City and working closely with the Region Managing Director and the broader regional leadership team, the role delivers the global strategy and the regional business plan across the Eastern U.S. from offices in New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and Newark, New Jersey. These are core U.S. markets for Arup that combine global-scale clients, complex urban challenges, and sustained investment in infrastructure, real estate, and civic institutions – the conditions where Arup’s Total Design mindset and integrated engineering, planning, and advisory capabilities deliver the greatest value.
The role requires an experienced and influential leader with a successful record of building and leading high-performing teams into highly competitive markets, establishing and sustaining strong client relations, winning and delivering major opportunities, making the quick, quality decisions required to run a large and complex business, and communicating values and vision that motivate members across grades and roles.

The Opportunity
The Managing Principal will work closely with global and regional leaders and colleagues across the East Geography to deliver the following
- Client & Market Leadership
- Actively build and enhance Arup’s brand, reputation, and market position across the geography.
- Develop, deepen, and grow strategic client relationships across key cities, sectors, and priority accounts, with priority given to the New York City metro market.
- Drive sustainable growth and increased market share through exceptional client service and project delivery.
- Apply strong commercial judgement and financial acumen to deliver high-quality outcomes for clients and long-term value for the business.
- People Leadership
- Lead and develop talent across the East Geography, fostering an inclusive, high performing, and empowering culture.
- Build and lead a strong Geography leadership team to drive performance, accountability, and delivery.
- Inspire innovation, ambition, and sustained engagement to support long-term business success.
- Serve as a senior, visible representative of Arup across the East geography, strengthening relationships and market presence, with an emphasis on the New York City metro market.
- Strategy & Integration
- Translate global strategy and the region’s business plan into clear, executable priorities at the geography level.
- Align the geography around consistent, global systems, governance, and ways of working.
- Integrate the full breadth of Arup’s skills and services to deliver joined-up, high value outcomes for clients.
- Operational & Commercial Leadership
- Work with regional and market-focused leaders to set up the strategic and commercial agenda for the East geography, translating the Regional Integrated Business Plan and Global Strategy into executable outcomes.
- Provide enterprise level leadership and oversight of operational performance.
- Lead transformation, change, and growth across Groups, Markets, and Businesses, ensuring alignment, integration, and disciplined execution.
Anticipate and shape future capability requirements, aligning investment decisions with market demand, risk, and long-term strategic priorities.

Is this role right for you?
- Hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant engineering field.
- Possess a Professional Engineering license.
- At least 20 years of post-graduate engineering or professional consulting experience in North America.
- Extensive experience operating at senior leadership level within complex, matrixed organizations in the A/E/C industry.
- Demonstrated record of delivering sustained commercial and operational performance.
- Deep market and business insight, with a proven ability to identify and realize growth opportunities.
- Credible, values led people leader who builds trust, followership, and high performing teams.
- Proven experience leading transformation and change in dynamic, complex environments.
- Growth-oriented mindset with the ability to balance long-term strategy with disciplined execution.
Measures of Success
- Consistently strong operational and commercial performance against the annual business plan.
- Sustained growth and diversification of strategic client relationships aligned to global and regional business strategies.
- Positive member experience, with attrition at or below the regional average, and high engagement scores as evidenced in regular employee surveys.
- Empowered and aligned leaders across the geography and a robust succession pipeline for all key roles.

NY/NJ Hiring Range - The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in NY / NJ is $345,000 to $380,000 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of NY/NJ will differ.
