The Opportunity

The HSEQ Geography Leader Europe Central will manage a team of HSEQ Business Partners and Advisers across Europe Central Region which covers Netherlands, Germany and Poland. This role will report directly to the EIMEA Region HSEQ Leader, along with operational reporting through to the Business Leaders in the Europe Central Region. They are responsible for partnering with the local leadership to deliver HSEQ activities that enhance project delivery, our objectives and policy outcomes.

This role will be based out of one of the Arup offices within the Europe Central Region: Netherlands, Germany or Poland. The individual will hold proficiency in Germany, Dutch or Polish, in addition to English. They will also hold competency in Safety, Environment or Quality within at least one of the Europe Central Region Countries.

Key responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Provide clear direction, support to motivate team members to deliver an excellent service to the business.
  • Efficiently allocate resources and manage workloads to ensure an excellent and equitable service is delivered to business.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment that encourages open dialogue and diverse perspectives.
  • Identify individual’s training needs and opportunities for professional growth and development.
  • Mentor and coach team members to enhance their skills and career progression.

Strategic Direction

  • Strong understanding of both the strategic direction of clients and how HSEQ strategy can enhance their plans.
  • Ability to communicate HSEQ and firm strategic plan into practical actions across all their geography/region
  • In depth understanding of operational risk profile/context of their geography/region against growth ambitions
  • Monitor the portfolio of services provided to identify material changes in the HSEQ risk profile and the validity of accreditations, certifications and regulated HSEQ competencies.

External Influence

  • Invest in growing your external presence, making connections in Arup client companies and partners, attending industry events.
  • Collaborate with a professional network within and outside of Arup, investing time to learn how other organisations and professions approach HSEQ.
  • Strong recognition within industry of profile/position and how Arup, plus their own brand, influence industry outcomes.
  • Establish top 10 client list and relationships across the region to drive deeper relationships with towards influencing beyond contractual value.

Deliver Excellence

  • Business partnering: Manage the work of the team in partnering with local PDs, PMs and office leaders to deliver HSEQ activities, coaching and challenging project teams, to drive their projects forward, encouraging best practice and consistency. Manage capacity, ensuring alignment of current and future resources to need.
  • Work winning: Ensure commercial teams have the in depth technical and operational advice for bids, pre-qualification questionnaires and certification schemes, raising any major pursuits queries to HSEQ’s identified team.
  • High Quality: Promote high standards of work by the team. Ensure team have structured, consistent and efficient approaches to deliver work on time and to a high standard with consideration for the context and stakeholders involved.
  • Compliance: Ensure our statutory obligations are adhered to and that their geography/region are HSEQ complaint. Lead compliance reviews and escalate areas of significant non-compliance.
  • Training: Manage local training provision, enabling team to deliver engaging and informative training across the geography/region. Manage validity of the competency, addressing any expiration and validity issues
  • Champion and Promote: Be an ambassador of HSEQ, drive the implementation and improvement of quality, H&S and environmental management systems.
  • Data: Promote the importance of data integrity, reliability, accuracy to the team, driving forwards ways to use data to improve our service to the business.
  • Reporting: Commission, lead and review reports for your area of the business. Present insights to leadership and lead discussion on mitigating solutions
  • Digital: Advocate continual improvement and enable team to generate solutions to solve and improve processes.
  • Ownership: Responsible for delivering excellence and strategic projects across their geography/region, demonstrating a proactive approach to balancing the needs of both.
  • Customer focus: Have a strong customer focus, in depth understanding of their drivers, problems or needs, and enable team to deliver services to resolve/meet those needs.
  • Adaptability: Demonstrate and role model a positive, growth mindset, embrace new ways of working, willingness to learn new skills to enable flexibility in a dynamic work environment

Quality Management

  • Partner with large, complex or high-risk projects to deliver work of quality, using our quality management systems and the programme of quality checking and inspection of work.
  • Ensure the programme of internal audits, checking and inspections are completed to plan across geography/region, lead where necessary on large, complex or high-risk audits.
  • Consolidate audit (internal & external) findings across geography/region to present consistent approach. Ensure actions are effectively tracked and managed to completion. Present insights to leadership and lead discussion on mitigating solutions.
  • Review project quality plans and inspection regimes (where required) across geography/region. Manage quality audits with high-risk / complex JVs, clients or projects.
  • Ensure that consistent, effective and engaging local briefings on the quality management system are provided, to improve the understanding of the requirements and individual roles, responsibilities and tasks

Health, Safety and Wellbeing

  • Promote a culture of care where safety is everyone’s responsibility and integrated within everything we do, advise and coach leadership on role modelling.
  • Manage H&S across the geography, collaborating with People & Culture on the management of health and wellbeing.
  • Ensure your team provides consistent professional safety advice for bids, projects, site visits, travel and facilities to their local business.
  • Ensure risk assessments/SWMS, safety plans and methods statements are reviewed consistently and effectively by the team. Facilitate the establishment of suitable risk mitigations and control measures.
  • Manage the consistency of local advice for fire safety, first aid, emergency response, workstation assessments, environmental compliance, office inductions, physical security, and contractor management.
  • Consolidate and share local incident prevention and safety activities across geography/region.  Manage any escalated investigations, ensuring appropriate and timely reporting of incidents, and the establishment of effective corrective action. Collaborate with Major Incident response team when required.
  • Champion design safety, partnering with project teams to integrate the design safety framework and key concepts within their designs.
  • Manage any escalated issues from contractor safety management, their H&S policies and risk assessments.
  • Ensure there is an effective process for the management of protective clothing and equipment across their geography/region

Environment and Sustainability

  • Influence Arup to achieve its sustainability goals by promoting the environmental management system and the integration of sustainable concepts within our business operations, processes and local decision-making.
  • Ensure there is an effective, robust programme for collecting and inputting environmental data into systems across their geography/region. Oversee local Environmental Aspects Registers and improvement plans.
  • Manage Environmental Aspects Registers and improvement plans.
  • Apply risk-based assurance towards project environmental outcomes and obligations across the geography/region to ensure client satisfaction and legislative compliance.
  • Provide compliance advice and assurance to their Arup leaders to understand environmental obligations as duty holders.
  • Act as the functional partner between ESG (Environmental & Sustainability Group) functions to ensure roles and responsibilities are clearly defined and deployed to meet legislative obligations.
  • Consolidate and share environmental awareness and controls from across geography/region to support consistency in process application i.e. waste management, review of materials being consumed or installed within offices.
  • Manage any sub-contractors found to be non-compliant with Arup environmental standards and practices.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Lead business continuity, consolidating plans across the geography/region.
  • Ensure local emergency plans are in place and that the routine testing of emergency communication systems, such as Everbridge and International SOS is carried out
  • Ensure that contractors’ H&S policies and risk assessments, support Arup’s safety and business continuity plans.
  • Establish working relationship with local International SOS branch to support horizon scanning of emergent high risk travel locations against plans/tools Arup has established to support.
  • Conduct performance reviews against crisis/emergency to improve system of work.

     

     

Is this role right for you?

For this opportunity, we are seeking the following qualifications, skills and attributes:

  • Proficiency in Quality, Safety or Environmental Management within Germany, Netherlands or Poland.
  • Proficiency in English and at least one of the following languages; Dutch, German or Polish.
  • The role will be based within one of the Arup offices within Germany, Netherlands or Poland.
  • Professionally qualified in at least one discipline Quality, H&S or Environmental Management.
  • Developing knowledge of all disciplines of HSEQ
  • A passion for driving HSEQ forwards
