High Voltage (HV) electrical infrastructure is a key enabler for decarbonised energy transmission, storage, and interconnection.

The Opportunity

This is your chance to drive innovation in the Energy Team and contribute to projects across the Energy, Science, Industry and Transport sectors. This includes the delivery of high voltage-related projects for data centres, interconnectors, offshore wind, other renewables and energy storage.

As a HV Electrical Engineer Specialist at Arup, you will:

  • Develop business around and contribute to win HV projects, both in Spain and in the Europe Region.

  • Provide electrical technical leadership and design management in energy transition projects.

  • Support renewable generation projects and interconnection projects.

  • Manage delivery of Energy bids and projects.

  • Upskill in HVDC for interconnector projects.

  • Contribute to HV power projects within the Data Centre business (immediate requirement).

  • Grow and consolidate the HV Spanish current team.

  • Develop our market presence in renewable energy sectors in Spain and Europe Region

  • Act as ambassador for Arup in energy transition.

  • Enhance Arup’s credibility and profile in offering HV electrical services in Spain and rest of the Region.

  • Engage with clients and attend industry events to build relationships.

  • Technical expertise and supporting recruitment/upskilling of Energy team in the HV electrical sector.

  • Collaboration with UKIMEA and European teams to win and deliver HV infrastructure projects.

  • Maintain market-leading knowledge in the transformation of existing electricity grids to accommodate emerging and developing decarbonisation technologies.

  • Bring resilience to our energy team in Spain and Europe.

Does this role inspire you?

We are looking for someone proactive and dynamic who is willing to be part of the Energy team in Arup Madrid. Ideally, you’ll bring:

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or related discipline.

  • Significant experience (e.g., 15+ years) working on high voltage (HV) electrical systems and infrastructure projects.

  • Strong technical expertise in HV design, analysis, and delivery.

  • Experience and willingness to develop the HV business in Spain and ideally Europe, creating new clients and winning projects around the energy sector.

  • Proven experience in project management and technical leadership on HV projects.

  • Strong knowledge of HV transmission and distribution systems, including renewable generation and interconnections.

  • Fluent in English and Spanish (spoken and written).

  • Excellent communication and client engagement skills.

  • Willingness to travel and work on-site in Spain and across Europe when needed.

Bonus points if you have:

  • Experience with HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) technology and interconnector projects

  • Experience of power system analysis and delivery of detailed power systems studies in software packages, such as DIgSILENT, PowerFactory, PSS/E, IPSA, ETAP, PSCAD, EMTP-ATP, ERACS and SKM

  • Capability in DPL, Python, or other modelling languages

  • Experience in performing insulation co-ordination studies

  • Working knowledge of power system protection settings and co-ordination

  • Detailed cable thermal rating calculations

  • Transformer design and rating calculations

  • System losses calculations

  • Cost/benefit analysis

  • Knowledge of energy transition and decarbonisation strategies

  • Previous experience in the data centre sector or critical infrastructure projects

  • Proven track record in business development and market growth

  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary and international teams

  • Familiarity with relevant European and Spanish HV electrical standards and regulations

  • Experience mentoring or growing technical teams

  • Participation in industry events, conferences, or technical panels.
