Reporting to the SIA LATAM Team Leader, the Health & Safety Specialist will support the delivery of infrastructure and corporate projects across Colombia, the wider LATAM region, and potentially international markets.
The role involves providing technical expertise in Occupational Health and Safety (H&S), supporting project delivery, and ensuring alignment with Colombian regulatory requirements and international good practice, particularly in high-risk infrastructure environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the delivery of Arup’s Sustainability Investment Advisory (SIA) services in LATAM, with a focus on occupational health and safety (H&S).
- Lead or support multidisciplinary teams in the development and implementation of H&S solutions for infrastructure projects such as roads, transport systems, and large-scale construction works.
- Conduct and support H&S due diligence, compliance assessments, and audits, including site visits, data review, and preparation of technical reports.
- Identify, assess, and manage occupational health and safety risks across project phases (design, pre-construction, and construction).
- Ensure compliance with Colombian H&S regulations (SG-SST) and alignment with international good practice (e.g., ISO 45001).
- Evaluate contractor performance and support the development of contractor H&S management approaches.
- Support the integration of H&S considerations into project design, planning, and execution, particularly for high-risk construction activities.
- Contribute to proposal preparation, technical inputs, and business development activities related to H&S services.
- Promote continuous improvement of H&S performance across projects through best practices and lessons learned.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Safety Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Valid Colombian SST professional license (mandatory).
- Minimum 4 years of professional experience in occupational health and safety roles, preferably in infrastructure or construction projects.
- Strong knowledge of Colombian H&S regulatory framework (SG-SST) and its practical implementation.
- Proven experience in: H&S risk identification and assessment, H&S audits and compliance reviews, Incident investigation and corrective actions, Contractor H&S management
- Advanced English proficiency (B2 or higher, written and spoken). Applications must include a CV in English.
Preferred
- Experience working on high-risk environments (e.g., road construction, civil works, large infrastructure) is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with international standards such as: ISO 45001 (required/strongly preferred), IFC Performance Standards (desirable)
- Experience supporting projects financed under international standards or working with lenders is a plus.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
- Excellent planning, organization, and time-management skills in a consulting environment.
- Must be eligible to work in Colombia without current or future employer-sponsored work authorization.
