See it differently

You see the world through a unique lens and that’s exactly what we need. We embrace how you see things differently – it’s essential for creating a sustainable future.

Arup is a global consultancy with advisory and technical expertise across more than 150 disciplines. We guide, plan and design the future of the built environment. Globally, each year we recruit hundreds of graduates to help us see things differently and solve the most complex challenges facing our clients, climate and communities.

The Opportunity

  • Undertake qualitative and quantitative physical risk assessments of buildings and infrastructure for multiple hazards including earthquake, flood, wind, heat, and wildfire, among others.

  • Undertake hazard analysis for multiple hazards, which may include climate change analysis and apply methods to incorporate climate change into hazard models.

  • Perform vulnerability analysis of assets considering different types of hazards; apply advanced simulation methods, engineering calculations, precedent research, etc.

  • Support the development of risk mitigation, resilience and climate adaptation strategies, when applicable, for buildings and infrastructure projects as well as for cities and communities.

  • Apply best practices in risk-based decision making and adaptation planning (e.g., cost-benefit analysis, adaptation pathways).

  • Employ and develop automation scripts for risk models and other daily tasks.

  • Support the development of project deliverables including reporting, enabling digital platforms, and communicating findings to clients and stakeholders.

Is this role right for you?

  • Minimum of a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Climate Science or similar. An MS or PhD in engineering, science, or risk management is desirable but not required.

  • Basic understanding of computer programming and coding experience to enable hazard and/or engineering risk calculations and results postprocessing / visualization.

  • Understanding of basic concepts in risk, statistics and probability.

  • Interest in understanding climate change and natural hazard risks and improving the resilience of assets in the built environment.

  • Understanding of multi-hazard qualitative and quantitative risk assessment methods and models preferred.

  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to conduct risk assessments, evaluate adaptation options, perform cost-benefit analysis, and develop data-driven recommendations preferred.

  • Familiarity with probabilistic risk modeling concepts and methodologies such as FEMA P-58 and HAZUS, or similar preferred.

  • Proficiency in computer programming preferred.

  • Subject matter expertise with one or more hazards such as earthquake, wind, flood, wildfire, or extreme heat, or expertise in climate change preferred.

  • Proficiency in GIS software preferred.

  • Understanding of factors which influence the resilience of buildings and other physical infrastructure, organizations, and communities preferred.

We’re looking for:

  • Recent and soon-to-be graduates: Whether you’ve just graduated or are graduating before the role starts, we want to hear from you if your degree is in a relevant field.

  • Changemakers: A passion for sustainable development and creating a better world is key.
