The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Fire Engineer to join our UK team. This role is vital to help deliver our growing portfolio of exciting projects and to assist in the development of our diverse, innovative, multi-cultural and self-motivated team of fire safety consultants.

The successful candidate will complement our fire safety team and help deliver fire safety engineering services for our clients. You will be part of a 400+ strong fire safety skills network across 20 offices around the World. Our members have access to Arup University, which oversees over 50 other skills networks, all learning and development offering, an in-house library and a foresight and innovation team.

The successful candidate will manage the fire safety input to a range of different projects, oversee and mentor junior engineers, with support by the project director and the wider team. The role will involve interactive and collaborative working with fire safety colleagues and multidisciplinary teams at Arup.

Our projects are diverse and range from conceptual fire strategy development through to handing over landmark projects; we undertake fire safety research to develop evidence-based solutions for novel fire safety hazards and strive to find ways to improve safety equity for the most vulnerable. We do this for our clients, and in collaboration with academia and industry. We strive to enable a sustainable, resilient built environment, using the latest knowledge and expertise, assisted by our own in-house digital tools and software.

We strive for excellence and invest in the development of our people. You will have access to a wide range of training and development opportunities, including CPD events. Once you have demonstrated a suitable skill in fire safety engineering and delivery of projects there will be opportunities to advance your career.

Is this role right for you?

As a Fire Engineer you would be expected to understand and implement the principle of fire science on real projects via the engineering process (goals, objectives, building appraisal and hazards, design fire scenarios etc). Investigating and applying appropriate legislation and design guidance for use on your projects. You will develop and implement fire strategies in collaboration with the design team and relevant stakeholders. Understanding the Total Fire Safety concept: from client brief, through design and construction; taking account of the socio-technical context, seeking to pre-empt fire safety issues common at different stages of a project, so that the end result delivers on the client brief.

Required skills and knowledge

  • Experience in a fire engineering consultancy or similar environment (industry related).
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation and guidance used in the UK, and awareness of the new regulatory regime.
  • Experience in delivering evidence-based fire safety solutions and development of fire strategies for UK based projects, in a range of different sectors.
  • Understand the fire engineering challenges relevant to different design stages from the client brief through to construction and operation.
  • Possess excellent report writing and communication skills, be collaborative, be creative and engaging.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, working to tight deadlines and juggling multiple demands and deliverables.
  • Proactive in resolving issues, creating solutions, relying on others as required for assistance and experience.

Qualifications

  • You will have as a minimum a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant degree subject (fire engineering, other types of engineering, or architecture related degree).
  • You should have registered with a relevant institution such as the Institution of Fire Engineers and should be working towards gaining Chartered Engineer status.
