We strive to build a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable world. From climate action to social equity, we consider the broadest impacts of our work. Sustainable development is at the heart of everything we do, and this purpose shapes our culture and the focus of our leadership. We incorporate environmental and social benefits into our work with communities and clients. Arup offers a broad and deep range of climate and sustainability services, spanning from decarbonizing buildings and electrifying transport to improving climate resilience. You would be joining our multidisciplinary team focusing on technical excellence and innovative solutions that shape a better future for people and the planet.
Arup is looking for an Environmental Consulting Leader to join its Toronto office and continue the growth of its Environmental Consulting business in Canada, with an initial focus on the Ontario market. This leadership role involves working closely with multidisciplinary teams across Toronto, the Americas, and other Arup regions to support a variety of our projects. Collaborate with the Lead for Urban, Transportation, and Environmental Planning in Canada. Provide strategic direction and technical expertise in environmental services!
Given the diverse project work Arup delivers, we are looking for someone with a broad understanding of environmental consulting, with specialized knowledge in one or more areas. These may include: impact assessment, site assessment and remediation, compliance, and collaborator and Indigenous engagement. Responsibilities include leading a team of environmental professionals, pilot environmental components of projects, handling environmental initiatives, coordinating with partners and sub-consultants, and chipping in to the development of a strong local team. Projects will vary in scale and complexity, offering the opportunity to work on everything from buildings to major infrastructure in transportation, government, commercial, energy, and water sectors!
If you’re dedicated to working with Arup but your past experience doesn’t quite align with every qualification of this posting, we encourage you to apply. You just might be suitable for this or other roles. We are always looking for great talent to join our team.
The opportunity
- Lead environmental planning studies and Environmental/Impact Assessment (EA/IA) related activities: this requires expertise processes for various sectors and projects (e.g. Federal, Comprehensive, or Provincial processes; knowledge of Ontario Class processes such as the Municipal process, and other processes such as Transit and Rail Project Assessment Process); technical understanding of environmental fields and regulatory requirements within the areas of natural environment, socio-economic, and cultural heritage.
- Lead post-EA obligations, including securing permits, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supervising environmental requirements during project implementation and construction.
- Coordination of sub-consultants for ESAs, remediation, risk assessment, and soil management in Ontario.
- Plan and support collaborator and Indigenous consultations, preparing technical content for public meetings, and facilitating engagement throughout EA and infrastructure projects.
- Handle internal teams and sub-consultants to complete technical studies and compile comprehensive environmental reports.
- Collaboration with complementary teams of architects, engineers, and designers, promoting sustainable, environment-led design solutions.
- Manage client relationships, prepare proposals, cost estimates and chip in to new business opportunities.
- Display strong interpersonal and negotiation skills, keep informed on environmental laws and standard processes, engage in professional committees, and handle various projects with relevant project management tools.
You will have the opportunity to do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.
Is this role right for you?
- Bachelor's or equivalent experience in Environmental Science, Engineering, Planning or related field required.
- A professional designation, or eligibility, in Canada such as P.Eng., P.Geo., or a Professional Planning designation would be an asset.
- Sophisticated communication skills for team-based working, excellent planning and organization skills required for our fast-paced environment, and be highly motivated, proactive, and willing to solve new challenges.
- Ability to handle different projects through project planning, resourcing, budgeting, monitoring, and successful project delivery.
- Fluency in both written and spoken English. French language skills are an asset.
