Environmental and Building Physics / CFD – 2026 Work Placement

The Opportunity
We are looking for a student to work within our Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) team and help develop multidisciplinary solutions for the built environment. We combine our technical expertise with digital solutions to support building design and resolve environmental and building physics challenges.
As a work placement student part of the CFD team at Arup, you will:
Develop knowledge and skills in understanding and analysing local microclimates
Assist with studies to identify the impact of different climate conditions on microclimate, pedestrian wind comfort and air quality.
Learn how to perform building physics and CFD analyses to determine critical conditions to support and improve design decisions (wind & thermal comfort, emission dispersion, ventilation, mechanical heating and cooling, building physics)
Assist in undertaking climate investigations to understand the risk posed by natural hazards and the physical threat of climate change.
Collaborate with other structural engineers, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, and risk consultants on innovative buildings and infrastructure projects.
Work closely with our in-house technical and digital specialists to help find unique solutions for our clients’ challenges
Attend design team meetings and present design outcomes.
Does this role inspire you?
We're looking for students who are currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s or higher Degree in Civil, Environmental, Structural, Mechanical, Building Engineering, or other related disciplines.
We also value:
Fundamental knowledge of fluid dynamics, building physics, energy modelling and/or environmental physics.
Basic coding, scripting and / or digital awareness skills.
Interest in the built environment.
Experience in computational fluid dynamics
Familiarity with Python or other programming languages.
Experience or familiarity with the built environment, i.e. buildings, transportation infrastructure, and other civil infrastructure through research.
