Job Title - Energy Consultant

Location Manchester or Sheffield

Tackling climate change is the most difficult challenge humanity has faced and to overcome it will require experts from all disciplines and backgrounds to come together and collaborate.  In response, Arup has made sustainability and the urgent need to transform the energy system to zero carbon it’s most important priority, through the launch of our climate services plan.  We are already recognised as leading consultants in this field and are working for both public and private sector clients on some of the most exciting and important engineering projects in the UK today.  Our work includes design and advice to offshore wind farm and solar photo-voltaic developers, advice to real estate developers, cities and governments on decarbonisation strategies, managing innovation programmes for low carbon technologies, delivering design solutions for tomorrows low carbon energy system and providing sustainable investment advice.

The Role

To support our growth in Energy, we have a new opportunity for  Energy Consultants to join our team in Manchester or Sheffield.

You will design, consult, and support the team on a wide variety of complex and ambitious decarbonising energy projects including energy distribution, district heating/cooling, renewable electricity generation (solar photovoltaic, wind and biomass), low carbon heat generation and emergent technologies (hydrogen, CCUS, large scale energy storage).  You will be working for a range of clients including national, regional, and local government, energy developers, education establishments, industry and healthcare providers.

Our projects strive for innovation and quality employing conventional, renewable and emerging technologies as appropriate for our clients.  Recent projects include solar photovoltaics, electricity storage, low temperature heat networks, low carbon heat generation, hydrogen for transport, biomass CHP projects, energy recovery facilities, and gas CHP plants for horticulture involving the capture of CO2, energy market reserves, university/healthcare campuses and data centres.

Your responsibilities in this role will include:

  • Supporting the team in supporting client engagement
  • Awareness of on electricity connection procurement, which requires a working knowledge of procurement methods and private wire schemes
  • Supporting the team in the development of energy strategies for large asset / estate owners and business cases for decarbonising energy investments from initial concept through to financial close, electricity procurement options and private wire schemes
  • Oversight of the concept design of energy schemes and systems, which include design drawings, technical specifications and invitation to tender packages, for technologies such as district heating/cooling, photovoltaics, battery storage, low carbon heat, battery storage, low carbon heat generation, hydrogen, biomass, energy recovery facilities, CHP, CCUS and distribution systems
  • Identifying and assessing funding options for energy projects and investments
  • Working with investors and developers of energy schemes and infrastructure investments to support the projects to financial close
  • Support in the Evaluation of energy scheme performance

About you

As Energy Consultant you will have previous experience of working in a consulting environment, preferably in multi-disciplinary teams, and will be working towards full chartered membership of an appropriate professional institution, such as the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the Energy Institute, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, or the Chartered Institution of Building Service Engineers. Experience with qualitative and quantitative analysis of energy data and trends and supporting technical consulting projects including energy infrastructure feasibility studies and portfolio or area energy strategies will be advantageous. 

Previous experience in developing business cases for energy investments and infrastructure refurbishments, and Energy decarbonisation masterplanning at an estate, city, regional and national scale would be of interest. In addition, the successful candidate would ideally have advised public and private sector clients on options, risks, and appropriate actions in their pursuit of net-zero carbon and will have been involved in researching innovative low carbon energy systems and other topics related to energy, cities, resilience and climate change.
