Joining Arup

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach have set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

Our Transport Modelling and City Modelling Lab teams bring together transport modellers, data scientists, software engineers and multidisciplinary specialists to solve complex urban challenges. We use data, modelling, visualisation and modern software engineering practices to help clients understand how people move, how cities function, and how future transport systems can be planned more effectively.

The Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced and ambitious Data Scientist / Software Engineer to join our collaborative and creative Transport Modelling and City Modelling Lab team in London.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys combining data science with strong software engineering practice. You will contribute to cutting-edge projects in agent-based and activity-based modelling, working alongside transport modellers, software engineers and multidisciplinary teams across the UK and internationally.

You will develop and apply innovative methodologies to solve complex urban modelling challenges using data, models and visualisation. A key part of the role will involve designing robust, scalable and reusable software solutions, contributing to open-source projects, building CI/CD pipelines, deploying cloud infrastructure, and maintaining high standards of code quality and documentation.
You will also support scheme assessments and mitigation testing through data analysis, interpret and communicate model outputs, and present insights clearly to clients and stakeholders. This is a great opportunity to apply modern software engineering practices to real-world transport and urban challenges while continuing to develop your technical, analytical and client-facing skills.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas.

You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for people who are passionate about data, software engineering and urban modelling, and who enjoy solving complex problems in a collaborative environment.
We are keen to hear from people who:

  • Have experience in data science, software engineering or a related technical field, with strong proficiency in Python and software engineering best practice.
  • Are confident using Git/GitHub workflows, including pull requests, code reviews and collaborative development.
  • Have experience with automated testing frameworks, CI/CD principles and deployment pipelines.
  • Can develop clear data visualisations and communicate complex technical outputs effectively to clients, stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Enjoy writing clean, maintainable and well-documented code, and are motivated by continuous learning, open-source collaboration and pragmatic problem-solving.

Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP or Azure, Infrastructure as Code tools, containerisation, agent-based modelling, Java, population synthesis, data engineering, Agile/Scrum/Kanban/XP methodologies or open-source contribution would be advantageous.
