Arup is looking to recruit a Senior Climate Change Consultant to join its Carbon & Climate Change team.  This senior professional will help to lead and grow the existing team, working with a global leader in this sector, as well as our business leaders, to develop our carbon and climate change services.  

Arup Ireland (based in offices in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway) is working on a wide variety of research, consultancy, analysis and design work for major projects and clients within the infrastructure, buildings, cities, transport, energy and water sectors in Ireland and overseas. 

The built environment (cities, buildings, infrastructure and related supply chains) is the world’s leading contributor of greenhouse gases. This sector is also where the realities of a changing climate are most significant. The carbon and climate team at Arup is in the vanguard of efforts to mitigate the built environment’s climate footprint and prepare it for the change that is coming. That leading position means we are focussed on emerging cross-cutting topics and helping embed them across Arup’s broad portfolio of projects, including;

  • Climate policy and advisory at city, corporate, national and infrastructure scale
  • Consumption-based foot printing methodologies;
  • Circular economy business model development and design strategies;
  • Climate change impact and risk assessment;
  • Adaptation and resilience strategy development;
  • Carbon and greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions assessment;
  • Carbon and GHG reduction advice;

We work across sectors, markets and geographies and with clients, colleagues and researchers to deliver these services, making use of the latest digital techniques to efficiently and effectively delivery projects.

The team has an existing and expanding reputation for its climate change consultancy work through ongoing collaborations with pioneering clients such as C40 Climate Leadership Group, Resilient Cities Initiative, and the Global Covenant of Mayors. These are delivered through a number of projects each year, working in a coordinated way with other climate change specialists and relevant disciplines across Arup and its regions to deliver projects globally around the world.


To support and grow our existing portfolio of projects we are looking to recruit a senior climate change specialist who will:

  • Lead and deliver specialist climate change consultancy services, often working as part of a multidisciplinary team. 
  • Bringing experience and knowledge to contribute to solving the climate crisis for a range of client.
  • Help to lead and develop the existing team, developing skills and embedding a culture of learning.
  • Through understanding the key businesses and services in Arup, deliver climate change consultancy services across a range of sectors.
  • Establishing and developing key client relationship.
  • Undertaking and leading projects in carbon and GHG emissions assessments and reduction studies.
  • Developing climate and resilience strategies for a range of clients’ development of business models and design responses based on circular economy principles.

All Arup staff benefit from regular training and development, with formal training provided through the Arup University.

The role will provide regular contact and liaison with both internal and external clients, regulatory authorities, research partners and wider stakeholders. We expect candidates to proactively develop a profile in the industry based on thought leadership, with a focus on client-facing industry events, articles and speaking opportunities.

The candidate will be a Senior Climate Change Professional in the team, working with a global leader to manage and develop the team as well as winning and delivering projects.  

  • Application and interpretation of future climate change scenarios.
  • Climatological analysis of historical and projected climate.
  • Downscaling of global and regional climate change model projections.
  • Climate hazard assessment including extreme value analysis. 
  • Assessments of climate change impacts and risks.
  • Adaptation and resilience strategies.
  • Environmental impact assessment for climate change, including  consultation workshops and preparation of reports.

Essential Skills and Knowledge

Potential candidates are likely to be able to demonstrate experience in some of the following areas:

Climate Change Mitigation

  • Experience of undertaking assessments of GHG emissions.
  • Experience of developing climate change mitigation and emissions reduction strategies.
  • Understanding of solutions to climate change and their applicability to various clients
  • Experience of applying circular economy principles to deliver tangible changed outcomes on projects, in businesses or in policy.

Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience

  • Experience of undertaking climate change impact and risk assessments
  • Experience of developing climate change adaptation and resilience strategies
  • Theoretical understanding of the climate system and formulation of climate change and meteorological models
  • Experience of applying downscaling techniques for the generation of future climate change scenarios
  • Experience of work in a climate change impact sector, e.g. flood risk or heat impacts

The successful candidate will also ideally have:

  • Experience in public and / or private sector responses to climate change.
  • Experience in design, construction and research environments.
  • Experience of driving change in organisations.
  • Excellent qualitative and quantitative research and analysis skills.
  • Excellent report writing and communication skills.  
  • Good working knowledge of international, European and UK policy, legislative, regulatory and planning frameworks.
  • Business development including input to bids and proposals and client relationships.

Candidates should have an appropriate degree and post graduate qualification plus a minimum of 10 years’ experience within the climate change or environmental sector. Candidates should be Chartered, or working towards Chartership, with an appropriate institution.

Desirable skills and knowledge:

  • Expertise in strategy and policy development 
  • A proven ability to self-learn and develop others.
  • Understanding of GHG, carbon modelling and standards.
  • Experience of undertaking environmental impact assessments (EIA) and an understanding of BREEAM, CEEQUAL and LEED or similar.
  • Understanding of wider environmental risk or corporate risk assessments.
  • Knowledge of open data.
  • Understanding of systemic approaches like circular economy.
  • Appreciation of systemic issues which bear on built environment outcomes, such as planning, politics, economics and culture/social preferences.
