The Opportunity 

An experienced Structural Engineer is sought to join and support the Arup Newcastle Bridges and Civil Structures (BCS) team which is part of the Arup North sub-region. We have an opportunity for an individual to join our team and take a leading role in the delivery of technical solutions across a wide range of civil engineering projects. Our work covers the full range of civil engineering structures, bridges and tunnels and we are a driving force behind many major infrastructure projects in a range of sectors including highways, rail, energy, water, ports and harbours. 

As the industry rapidly transforms through the use of digital technology we aim to be the leading digital consultancy in the built environment. In Bridges and Civil Structures this translates to an aspiration to be at the leading edge in the use of technology such as; automation tools, coding, databases, data analytics and 3d solid modelling. As such we are looking for individuals with a background of using digital tools and techniques as well as an aptitude and interest in further developing their own; and the wider groups, experience in this area to support and enhance the more traditional engineering skills.

Is this role right for you?

As a member of the multi-disciplinary design team, the successful candidate will produce and manage technical solutions, acting as a leading part of the engineering design team. Project tasks will include planning work activities and resource requirements and ensuring technical quality is maintained within agreed deadlines. As part of the role you will assist others within the team both through technical collaboration, and mentoring junior members of the team. This will include developing drawings and models with dedicated modellers, including checking and review of output and structural designs and calculations including (tender, scheme and detailed design as well as assessment and/or strengthening of existing structures). You will also be involved in specifications, technical notes, method statements and risk assessments, and will have good appreciation of structural mechanics and materials behaviour.

Requirements:

  • A BSc in Civil or Structural Engineering (or similar) and to hold or working towards chartership with a relevant professional body such as ICE or IStructE.
  • Previous experience in the design and/or construction of Bridges or Civil Structures. 
  • A background in structural analysis and undertaking design calculations and assessments, including writing specifications, reports and technical notes.
  • Knowledge of current Eurocode standards.
  • Knowledge of Health, Safety & Welfare and CDM Regulations and processes,
