The Role

Our Madrid office is seeking a consultant to join our award-winning Business & Investor Advisory (‘BIA’) team. to work on a variety of engagements primarily in the infrastructure space. Arup is active across a range of sectors within infrastructure, such as roads, public transport, EV charging, ports, airports, car parks, hospitals and other public buildings.

Wondering what BIA is? It is engineering with a twist, focusing on the overlap between Arup’s core business (i.e. commercial, technical, and ESG), and finance or legal. The successful candidate will work on a variety of consulting projects providing advice to equity and debt investors, in the development, investment and financing of infrastructure projects.

We carry out highly exciting and challenging projects, in the field of strategic advisory, transaction due diligence, risk analysis, business case development, or economic appraisal. Our combined skillset allows us to advise our clients across entire range of operational dimensions of the infrastructure space, comprising:

  • Understanding the projects’ revenue potential, by running thorough market analysis which end up with comprehensive demand and revenue projections
  • Evaluating the regulatory setting in which assets operate, and analyse how the corporate structure translates in structured management and O&M. The cornerstone of our analysis are long-term opex and capex projections
  • Assessing projects’ ESG performance, against internationally recognised standards like the IFC’s Equator Principles or the EU Green Taxonomy, making sure their alignment with sustainable development

Our projects are interdisciplinary by nature, as they combine the knowledge, competences and passions of financial and economic specialists and engineers, which makes Arup's services unique in the global market. The successful candidate will:

  • Understand the infrastructure investment and project finance industry
  • Support projects ranging from feasibility / strategic studies, transaction due diligence, or asset management
  • Undertake technical, commercial and ESG due diligence of infrastructure assets
  • Carry out economic, regulatory, contractual, or financial analysis, as required by each project
  • Engage with other engineering teams within Arup, to support technical analysis of projects
  • Build flexible financial / commercial / operational models for the purpose of infrastructure equity or debt transactions, feasibility studies, or business case development
  • Run extensive data analysis and benchmarking of operational variables, such as capex, opex, revenue, etc
  • Liaise with other external advisory teams, including financial, legal or insurance advisors
  • Prepare high quality, precise and clear reports / presentations, to satisfy client needs and goals
  • Have a positive attitude and be a team player
  • Be good client facing and have excellent communication skills both verbally and written
  • Be a self-starter comfortable in taking initiative and responsibility
  • Be self-motivated, eager to learn and to experience new challenges every day
  • Be curious about the infrastructure market and seek to understand client and sector trends
  • Pro-actively approach and meet with clients to discuss new opportunities
  • Project management of due diligence assignments (or parts of)

Requirements

  • Qualified degree in engineering, business administration, finance, or related field
  • 2-5 years of working experience in the infrastructure sector
  • Exceptional quantitative and analytical skills, supported by outstanding Excel modelling skills, are essential
  • Excellent presentation and writing skills are required. Advanced capability with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint is required
  • Passionate about the combination of infrastructure, engineering and finance
  • Interest in developing technical and commercial knowledge outside of the core sector, such as energy transition or digital infrastructure is an advantage
  • Excellent Spanish and English skills are essential (both written and spoken). Any additional European language skills would be advantageous
