The Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity to support the leadership of the transport planning business in the North West, based in Manchester – joining a growing team of over 80 planners, policy makers, strategists, modellers and economists working across the North West and Yorkshire region.
With the rapid pace of transport devolution, major tscheme programmes across the North-West and in particular the delivery of Transport for Greater Manchester’s (TfGM) ambitious agenda, our work across transport planning, place making and strategic advisory is becoming more diverse and impactful. Arup is at the forefront of the agenda, our work leading the North-West Rail Vision for the Liverpool-Manchester Rail Board, rail devolution in Greater Manchester, Manchester Clean Air Zone, Active Neighbourhoods and the TfN Strategic Transport Plan are just some examples of the local, regional and nationally significant programmes the team you will be joining are currently delivering.
Based on this success, we have ambitious plans to grow our Manchester Transport Planning team and strengthen the integration with our broader cities planning capability, linking transport, housing, nature and the economy together.

Is this role right for you?
As a result of these growth opportunities, we are seeking an inspirational, politically astute and well-connected transport planner to help make a step change in the strategic role we play across the North-West – and support your ambitions into senior leadership roles. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute and influence the future planning of a dynamic and evolving team, developing our skillsets to ensure we have to breadth and depth of to deliver projects that shape the future of mobility in Manchester and beyond. You will play a pivotal role in delivering innovative solutions that support sustainable transport, active travel, public transport enhancements, and integrated land-use planning – utilising your strong track record of being a commercially astute, engaging and motivational programme, established connections / networks and strong personal profile.
Requirements:
- Familiar with presenting to clients, bidding, winning, reviewing and steering the delivery of a number of strategic projects of regional national significance. Positioning Arup to win more projects through Frameworks and wider connections through both the public and private sectors.
- The ability to work with others to develop and implement a forward-thinking strategic Business Plan for Transport Planning across the NWY, ensuring consistency with regional strategies.
- A background in maintaining close relationships with key stakeholders on major projects operating in the NWY region. Identifying their strategic project priorities in order to position Arup for future work.
- Keeping up-to-date with market developments, anticipating market changes, and assessing opportunities for the expansion of services.
