We are seeking an Associate Principal, Structural Engineer to play a key role in supporting the growth of our heritage building practice in Ottawa, and to help solidify Arup’s leadership in design innovation. This is a pivotal opportunity for a technically strong and creative engineer with a passion for the assessment, preservation, and adaptive reuse of historic structures, as well as an interest in shaping the future of the built environment.

The Opportunity

  • Lead the assessment, preservation and adaptive reuse of historic and heritage structures, applying technical expertise and creative problem-solving to deliver innovative solutions.
  • Collaborate with leadership to develop and execute a dynamic go-to-market strategy aimed at expanding Arup’s structural and heritage practice in Ottawa.
  • Cultivate and maintain trusted relationships with clients, architects and industry partners, strengthening Arup’s presence in the market.
  • Support the growth of the SMEP team in Ottawa, including mentoring and developing junior staff.
  • Lead and contribute to high-profile projects, ensuring seamless multidisciplinary coordination and technical excellence.
  • Partner with the Ottawa Office Leader on GTM initiatives and business-development activities.
  • Help position Arup as a leader in heritage and conservation work across the province.

The Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural or Civil Engineering required (Master’s preferred).
  • A minimum of 15 years’ experience in structural engineering, including demonstrated experience in heritage, preservation or adaptive-reuse projects required.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.); licensure in Ontario (or local jurisdiction) required.
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and deliver projects of varying scale.
  • Established network within the Ottawa market, with a reputation for technical excellence and leadership.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with a track record of client engagement and business development.

Ottawa hiring range — The good-faith base-salary range for this role in Ottawa is CAD $174,000 to CAD $200,000.
This range is commensurate with experience, educational background and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note that hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of Ottawa will differ.
