The Opportunity

Arup's mechanical engineers design buildings that maximise value for our clients, while minimising their environmental impact. Due to an increase in project work we have an opportunity for an Associate Mechanical Engineer to help develop our team of engineers and specialist consultants in developing practical decarbonisation strategies and delivering interventions for existing buildings. We can offer technically challenging work on cutting-edge projects and are looking for a permanent member for our creative, friendly Building Engineering Team in London.

The wider team are currently involved in some of the most innovative new build and retrofit/ refurbishment projects world-wide from feasibility stage through to practical completion led by a purpose-driven approach to sustainable development. Current and recent projects include residential and social infrastructure projects such as Ebury Bridge Estate and Canada Water Regeneration; rail projects such as Sydney Metro, Copenhagen Metro and Euston Station; commercial developments such as 6-8 Bishopsgate, 90 Long Acre; and a variety of projects such as large refurbishments in active buildings, residential projects with high sustainability targets and developing and delivering decarbonisation strategies to support our clients reduce the carbon emissions of their buildings and portfolios.

The focus of the specific work you will lead is across the whole journey to decarbonisation, from portfolio level target setting and pathways, to early-stage existing building strategy and the design and delivery of interventions. This is also supported by paid research work as well as complementary commissions focused on climate adaptation and resilience. Current clients in this area include TfL, the GLA, CCC, local authorities, housing associations, private developers and asset managers with large building portfolios.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas.

You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?

You will be guiding and coordinating the strategy development and design delivery of various projects, leading a team from initial briefing through scheme & detail design to installation, while providing technical guidance and design management with a focus on implementing decarbonisation strategies. You will also mentor and develop junior colleagues and support the development of our growing work in delivering decarbonisation for clients. In your role in the Group, you will be working alongside colleagues from all over Arup drawing in expertise in decarbonisation from colleagues in London, the UK and around the world. With a technical background in mechanical engineering and an in-depth understanding of low carbon solutions, you will have the self-assurance to take on lead roles on projects, including managing sub-consultants. Specific responsibilities include predicting and planning future resources and management of the team financial performance. You will also contribute to winning work by taking a role in the preparation and presentation of bids and liaising directly with our clients.

If you are a passionate mechanical engineer with a real interest in decarbonisation and working with our clients to make their buildings more sustainable, then we want to hear from you. If you have a technical background in building services engineering, awareness of sector specific legislation, code requirements and are comfortable guiding teams and communicating with clients, this could be the role for you.

Requirements

  • Chartered Engineer with an understanding of energy systems in the built environment.
  • You should have strong commercial and client facing skills and be able to represent Arup externally. You will be able to direct and deliver bids to secure new work and support the identification of new opportunities.
  • Experience in undertaking decarbonization feasibility studies at portfolio and/or building level.
  • A track record of delivering sustainable building design solutions in terms of both energy and carbon, challenging yourself, the client, and the rest of the design team to achieve the optimum outcome for the project.
