Associate Intelligent Mobility leader

What we are looking for – 

We are looking for a passionate, commercially aware Intelligent Mobility leader with sound technical knowledge who is highly motivated to win work and manage existing projects within an Intelligent Mobility context, predominantly in our West region, but as a part of our growing, national Intelligent Mobility team.

Intelligent Mobility is an enabler of better outcomes for individuals and society, improving sustainability, enabling the economy and informing travellers. To achieve this, we work with clients to advise on all aspects of transport technology systems, from strategy and business through to design and operation.

We consider our services in Intelligent Mobility in the context of seven themes:- Mobility Pricing, Low Emission Mobility, Connected and Autonomous Vehicles, Mobility as a Service (MaaS), Systems and Operations (including ITS design), Active Travel and Data and Tools.  We would like to find a leader who is capable of leading the ITS  input to an existing portfolio of transport projects, whilst also having a keen interest in one or more of the more future-focussed aspects of our business, to enable the development of future workstreams.

The position will involve the management of projects and providing technical consultancy and strategic advice to clients. It will involve working with team members locally and nationally to design, develop and deliver innovative solutions within agreed timescales and budgets. Responsibilities will be varied, but will include project leadership and management, technical delivery, data analysis, report writing and work winning.

It will also involve team and client relationship development.  We are keen to establish a team of Intelligent Mobility specialists in our West region to supplement our established national team. The role will work alongside our successful highways transport teams, developing a local offering which best suits our established clients and better positions us to form new client relationships in Intelligent Mobility. 

What you’ll be doing - 

  • Leading the Intelligent Mobility and ITS input to an existing portfolio of transport projects in region and nationally;
  • Managing the delivery of a range of advisory projects in Intelligent Mobility for a range of UK clients.  Through our global community, there also exists the potential to work on our extensive overseas portfolio of work.
  • Initiating the expansion of the Intelligent Mobility business in the region, looking for client relationship opportunities, winning work and considering recruitment and training.
  • Working as a part of our national Intelligent Mobility team and representing the West as a part of our UK Intelligent Mobility Executive
  • Acting as an integrator and collaborator between our highways, rail and aviation teams in the local region and nationally
  • Acting with others in our Highways and Transport businesses to advise clients on how technologies and behaviours will change in the future and how highways operations and our business will need to respond.
  • Developing and maintaining client relations and business development activity working with clients to understand their needs and form compelling proposals for consultancy services.

What we look for in you -  

Ideally, you will have experience of leading and delivering complex intelligent mobility projects with a background in ITS design and experience in advisory services in the industry.  A collaborative approach, the ability to integrate project teams and a desire to challenge the norm are key skills in this role.

The successful candidate needs to be able to demonstrate strong client relations and have a track record of delivering innovative projects and work winning in the sector. Technically, the successful candidate will have demonstrable discipline expertise and thought leadership in at least two of the following areas: 

  • Intelligent Mobility
  • Delivery of ITS in a Design and Build Environment
  • Connected and autonomous vehicles and related highways design / infrastructure
  • Electric vehicles
  • Tolling and road user charging (and the linkage to economics and social acceptance issues)
  • Real-time traveller information
  • Smart ticketing
  • Traffic control centres 
  • Tunnel operations.

  • Excellent client management skills
  • Business development and tendering experience
  • Promoting the specialist skills as a differentiator in the market
  • Providing an aspirational role model for early and mid-career people
  • Building special skills in Arup by recruiting and developing others
  • Developing individuals in their technical specialisation.


  • An appropriate university degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Chartered member of an appropriate professional body e.g. IET or equivalent is essential.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Significant experience within specialist field such as Electromobility, Connected Autonomous Vehicles or Road User Charging.
  • Experience of responsibility for projects or significant self-contained pieces of work
  • Experience of medium term look ahead in planning working
  • Strong knowledge of ITS systems and technology
  • Focussed on client and project outcomes
  • Project management experience
  • Ability to understand complex issues and capture client requirements
  • Experience in supporting bidding and business development activities
