The Opportunity

We are currently seeking an Associate Fire Engineer to join our UK team and lead our established team of Fire Engineers based in our Manchester office. This role is vital to help deliver our growing portfolio of exciting projects and to assist in the development of our diverse, innovative, multi-cultural and self-motivated team of fire safety consultants. The successful candidate will manage the fire safety input to a range of different projects, oversee and mentor engineers, with support by the project director and the wider team. The role will involve interactive and collaborative working with fire safety colleagues and multidisciplinary teams at Arup. The role is for an experienced line manager who is capable of delivering quality fire safety solutions on time and on budget with the ability to gain agreement for prescriptive and performance based design solutions from approving authorities.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for someone who is technically well versed in fire safety legislation and guidance, and first principles design approaches, who can deliver evidence based fire safety solutions. A history of gaining consent for prescriptive and performance based design solutions from approving authorities is also important. We would like the successful candidate should be able to identify and pursue new project opportunities in in our NWY region in cities like Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool and York where Arup have offices. The successful candidate should be able to service and successfully deliver projects in various sectors with a particular focus on being client facing, a proven work winner, commercially astute and is able to develop and grow the team in the region. The successful candidate will complement our fire safety team and help deliver fire safety engineering services for our clients. You will be part of a 250+ strong fire safety skills network across 20 offices around the World. Our members have access to Arup University, which oversees over 50 other skills networks, all learning and development offering, an in-house library and a foresight and innovation team.

We are looking for:

  • Degree in fire safety engineering or relevant subject
  • Chartered with a relevant institution such as the Institution of Fire Engineers
  • Extensive exposure in delivering fire engineered solutions for UK based projects.
  • Familiarity with appropriate legislation and design guidance for use in the UK, awareness of industry opportunities and forthcoming changes coupled with the implementation of projects as well as discussing/presenting to clients and stakeholders on the topic.
  • Be familiar with RIBA stages of design or other design frameworks (e.g. GRIP) and appreciate the total fire concept: from the client brief through to construction and operation, the fire engineering opportunities relevant to different design stages and the level/type of fire engineering input to progress the design and contribute to completion.
